LeCatnip
Hello. Im looking to get a new stage piano for live gigs, using pianos, organs, strings, lead synth and pads mainly, some cool electronic/dance synths would be a bonus. Also the ability to split and layer a few voices would be good. Ive been looking at the Roland RD 300nx and the yamaha CP50. What do you guys think of they options, or is there something better im missing? Cheers
CEB
While you are at it might as well check out the Kurzweil SP4-8 at a $1400 street price. Yamaha MOX8 at about $1,700. The Korg M-50 88 at $1600. My personal favorite for that sort of thing is the Yamaha S90XS but it cost more at about $2400 street price. Ken Beaumont
Those are both fine stage pianos in that price range you might also look at the Kurzweil SP4-8 and the Kawaii MP6. Each of these excel at different things and have their pros and cons. I would suggest trying as many as possible before you buy. In that price range you might also want to try a full blown workstation like the MOX8 or Korg M50-88. The workstation will give you more options for things like arpeggiators and sequencers for dance grooves. The Kawaii has excellent action and is a very underrated board. The Kurzweil has a great selection of classic sounds most of these are spot on recreation of famous sounds. Want the Supertramp Wurly? Its in there along with many others. Boards: Kurzweil SP-6, Roland FA-08, VR-09, DeepMind 12 Modules: Korg Radias, Roland D-05, Bk7-m & Sonic Cell
CEB
I'm a Kawai guy. I like Kawai stuff but they are really skimpy on the synth sounds. I like the action a lot and I like how the controls are laid out. The MP-5 / MP-6/ MP-8 are easy to use as MIDI controllers if 4 zones are enough for you. My MP-5's key return is a little sluggish but it is easy on the hands and wrists. The MP-8II is the best digital action I have ever played. But it is a little heavy if you can find one. What do you guys think of they options, or is there something better im missing? Cheers Since you don't mention any cost limit - I think the Nord Stage 2 might be your best choice. Wonderful pianos, clonewheel built in, 2-part multi-timbral virtual analog that can load any custom sample you want, huge downloadable sample and piano library and a really nice effect section, where all effects can sync to a master (or midi) clock. The 88 key Stage 2 will cost you no more than $ 4,200... but IMHO it's worth every penny. Too much stuff, too little time, too few gigs, should spend more time practicing...! 🙄 main instruments: Nord Stage 3 compact, Yamaha CP88, Kurzweil PC4, Viscount KeyB Legend Live
BbAltered
Every major manufacturer makes a keyboard for all-around live gigs. Korg, Roland, Kurzweil, Yamaha, Kawai, and Nord all have reasonable contenders. If you're gonna spend $2-3,000, it makes sense to try as many of them as you can before laying your money down. For me, the relevant factors are sounds, keyboard feel, cost, weight and portability, being able to layer sounds, and sound editing, not necessarily in order. I myself chose the Roland RD-700. It had the best combination of my important factors. I thought the Yamaha CP-300 had a better piano sound and keyboard feel, but was too big and heavy, too expensive, and lacked the variety of EPs I wanted. I thought the Korg and Kurzweil keyboards were too soft for my touch. My advice to you: try them out and then tell us what YOU think. J.S. Ken Beaumont
The two boards the OP listed are in the $1700 USD range. So yes if money is no object there is also the PC3K8, Kronos and CP-1. andi85
That's what the CP5 is for :-) Next to the "premium" piano voices it comes with about a ton of extra sounds and its dynamic control is wonderful. Nord Piano 2 might be interesting, too. I haven't had the chance to play one, but the combination of the Nord piano sounds with the sample section might be great. jimmymio
My personal favorite for that sort of thing is the Yamaha S90XS but it cost more at about $2400 street price. In that case how about the S90ES? I actually prefer the action and the piano sounds on the ES to the XS? I would guess they go for about $1400 or less used. Not very good for organ thought. 1935 Mason & Hamlin Model A Korg Kronos 2 73 Nord Electro 6D 61 Yam S90ES Rhodes Stage 73 (1972)
