Ian Hunter keys on "The Hoople"?

This is one of those albums that was a cornerstone of my musical tastes growing up. Just recently ran into it and never realized that Ian Hunter is playing the keys?

 

I love not only that style of playing but the way it sits in the mix -- very light, but not thin.

 

Any of you folks playing like this? Or getting sounds like that? Or mixing like that? I'd welcome some tips. I seem to always just end up with something too bright.
