Still not getting it :idk

Wow. Really? Ok. To each his own. I'm not a huge fan of the style of most of her songs, but she's probably got the best female voice I've heard in years...right up there with anyone ever.

Great voice, I'm sure she's a nice gal. Unfortunately her songs, like a lot of contemporary stuff, lack anything really interesting in the way of melody. I often get asked to play material like this on solo piano. Take away the lyrics and vocal inflections and 9/10 times, you have an extremely DULL piece of music.

Sorry to sound like your grandad, but where the hell are the MELODY writers any more?

I don't listen to Western pop music that much, as I often listen to world music, experimental, dub, or other genres much more. It's not that I dislike pop music; I just don't always hear stuff that I like.

But the first time I heard Adele's "Rolling In the Deep", I was transfixed. I stopped to listen to the rest of that. Her voice and that song really are a force of nature, a powerful thing. I really like that song a lot, but haven't connected with the rest of "21" so much.

But I get the adulation from "Rolling In the Deep" at least. That song is a beautiful, powerful thing, and her singing is beautiful and powerful. She's not pretending to be anything else. There's no AutoTune, just someone singing a catchy tune in a very emotional, powerful way. I say what's not to like?

I agree 100%. Rolling In The Deep is a rare song; beautiful and powerful as you said, and her vocals are just amazing. I see Adele and I think that maybe, just maybe, the music industry is finally looking for people with singing and playing talent now and that perhaps all this form over substance stuff is going to go by the wayside. I sure hope so anyway.

Then I watch the Nikki Minaj and Chris Brown "performances" and think "Nah! That's just crazy talk!"

Adele reminds me of Amy Winehouse. Both British, both not in the physical mold of American pop stars.

Neither would have been given a chance by the industry were they American.

I don't find Adele to be any different from people who win American Idol, The Voice, etc. Isn't the point of those shows to promote singing talent?

News flash: all the music industry cares about is making money. If they can do that someone who can sing, they will; if they can do that with someone who can't, they will. So I don't understand all the comments about getting back to real singing and playing talent. It's always out there; maybe you're just not looking hard enough to find it.

Both of them were on the scene before Adele. Keep the faith brother!

In pop music, you'll always have some people who can sing, and some who....uh, well, look like models.

Hmm...maybe I haven't been clear.

I KNOW the talent has always been out there, but that's not who has been getting signed the last several years (some exceptions...mostly ironically from American Idol). With the popularity of American Idol, and now more recently The Voice, perhaps those who make decisions in the music industry have begun to realize that people really DO care about the quality of the music and that maybe BECAUSE of that they can make money with artists who have more talent than flash.

Anyway, I didn't say they WOULD do that. I said, "maybe, just maybe".

I can think of plenty of talented people who have record deals. The "music industry" is more than just the major labels. I guess I just don't care if they sign talented people or not because they dictate very little of what I listen to.

Personally, my favorite Adele single is not "Rolling In The Deep" or (Good Lord!) "Someone Like You" but "Chasing Pavements" from a couple of years ago. It sounds so much like what Burt Bacharach used to compose for Dionne Warwick that at first I thought he must have written it.

Nope - it was written by Adele. [video:youtube]

Most of the music I listen to has little to do with talent :)

It's more about inspiration and creativity. Technical skills are optional.

Grammy's are an industry sales event. Adele is Grammy perfect. She should cover the great female Grammy's of the last 50 years from You've Got a Friend to Fast Car to Wind Beneath my Wings to People to First Time (ever I saw your face) backed by a slew of famous people and produced by Quincy Jones. Maybe do a 25th anniversary edition of "We are the World."

But what does it matter that they don't? With the Internet, anyone can hear pretty much anything with a Google search, so not being able to hear talented people who aren't signed to a major label isn't an issue. Is it that not enough talented people are being marketed to the masses?

Yeah, it's nice that we can listen to anything we want with a simple search (still have to know WHAT to search for), but still, people DO listen to the radio. My teenage daughter and all her friends listen to WNCI "All The Hits" 97.9 here in Columbus, so they are affected by the stuff on there even though they all have smart phones and YouTube, etc. Major labels still have influence, and if a greater percentage of their signees are Adele rather than Chris Brown, then all the better.
