Ever break a strap?

Not having the greatest of luck lately...first the string last month, now this!

The leather part of the strap literally tore straight through, so I couldn't re-hook it. I was head banging and thrashing at the time, and it broke loose on the downstroke. I just propped my foot on the drum riser and set it on my knee for the last song of the set. During break, I unscrewed the button and just screwed it directly through an unripped part of the leather and into the guitar. That got me through the 3rd set.

StrapLoks... :cool::thu:

And believe it or not, I even have a spare strap with Straploks already on it and set to the same length as the one on my main guitar, but only because it's from a guitar I no longer have...

I have an Epiphone Explorer, and the diameter of the stock screw that goes through the button is bigger than the screw for the straplock. So big in fact, that I couldn't even drill out the hole in the straplock big enough - it wouldn't fit. So I did without. I suppose I could move it over an put another hole in it.

My lead guitarist uses straps that have these plastic snap things like you'd maybe see on a backpack or something. He leaves the ends permanently screw to his guitar, and snaps the strap on.

Still though, I never would have expected the hole to rip straight through. I don't know that a straplock would have made a difference, because the straplock would have ripped through, just the same.

It seems as thick as any of my other straps. It took a beating for the last 6 years. The other end was loosening up so I taped the crap out of it. I think it's a Levi's strap, but I could be mistaken.

If you wanted to be able to install the StraLoks, the hole could be plugged with doweling and re-drilled. But it sounds as if a different approach altogether might suit you as well or better, anyway.

Besides a new strap, there are various devices that slip over the strap and strap-button to secure it; plastic bread-bag clips are a good temporary, cheap option, and an even better one are the rubber gaskets used on Grolsh-style beer bottles, which can be bought by the bag at beer and wine maker's supply shops. You simply stretch the rubber ring over the strap and strap-button and there ya go.

lightbulb.gif I just found this- search up some Danco stock # 61805B faucet washers, they should do nicely.

Or, Google 'Grolsch gaskets', a lot of results will turn up. Better yet, gargle a couple of Grolsches and have at 'em. :D

Believe it or not, I too carry extra straps...one for each guitar and ready to go if I break a string...haven't broke a string since the early 80's but it scared me enough to always pack 2 or more guitars with straps...have never broke a strap (knock on wood) but they have slipped off as they get worn when not using strap locks...the only strap problems I've had are with the strap lock screw coming loose...it really bugs the sh*t outa me when this starts happening so I just take out the gorilla super glue when I get her home and add a little drop on the threads and they don't come loose anymore...
Take care, Larryz

Never even had a guitar come off the strap. Maybe I need to play more athletically...

Just so long as there are no ugly dismounts for your guitar... :rimshot:

Damn, wraub!

I had the parts of a Schaller Strap Lock that are on the strap come loose and fall apart, suddenly dropping my custom Strat-style guitar... ! I was lucky, I was able to catch it with no harm done to the guitar or myself.

(ALWAYS apply a little dab of Loctite Threadlocker to the threaded-hardware that holds Schaller Strap Locks onto the strap-ends)

A few years later, two large dogs that were playfully rough-housing knocked over that same guitar and the stand it was on; it hit the floor face-first and HARD, driving the threaded-insert for the treble-side bridge-post deeper into the body and partially through the back-side in the spring-cavity... !!:freak:

Just sounds like it was time to replace the strap. If you play hard and continually stretch the leather, it is bound to give eventually. 6 years of heavy use seems like it was just waiting to happen.
