Music Project File Sharing Question - Not about piracy!!

Just a quick question about preferred "personal" file sharing site that will take audio files and who uses what!

As a pretty busy muso, I have multiple projects that often require sending music to other musos I play with. Similarly, when I'm doing recording projects, I also have the need to share scratch mixes, tracks, et all with the people I'm working with.

These days, I've been ripping stuff and emailing tracks to people and I'm getting tired of it. I don't want to use a music "promotion" site, as this is strictly not for distribution stuff.

Is there a site where I can upload files, and then give password access to only those files, based on who needs them? Then they can log on, grab what they need and I can get some precious minutes back in my schedule.

I'm sure I'm not the first person here that needs to do this, so I thought I'd toss the question out there. A quick Google search didn't yield the results I'd hoped for.

These are the kind of File Sharing sites I am hoping to avoid for obvious reasons.

Klonk Here

Should I just get a "personal" webpage that uses a hosting service that allows for file storage/sharing?

It seemed like a no brainer until I started digging!!

Thanks in advance all!

One band I'm in uses DropBox. I don't remember paying anything for that. If I'm simply sending files back and forth to clients I use WeTransfer. I pay a fee to use WeTransfer, but it's fast and well worth the money, imo.

I really like Dropbox for this kind of thing. Shared folders are the key feature. When you add new files to the shared folder on your computer (or edit existing files, e.g. a setlist or song catalog), they'll automatically upload to Dropbox.com and automatically download to the machines of all the other people in your shared folder (if they have the desktop client installed).

The only thing that makes it less than ideal is that you have to log on to the website at dropbox.com and log in there to accept an invite to a shared folder, which is a slight pain in the butt if some of your fellow musos rely entirely on their smartphone for all things Internet. Other than that, everything's pretty automagic from the desktop client or the smartphone apps.

I use both DropBox and Box.net - I pay for the 50GB DropBox upgrade and keep all my documents in there, synced across 3 computers. Sharing folders is good, but if I want to share a single file I have to put it in my public folder first. Box.net is better in that regard - you can share a single file, no matter where it is in your file system. But Box.net doesn't tie into the filesystem on OS X like DropBox does (for offline storage). Both have iOS apps that are pretty neat - I keep my sheet music in DropBox and can sync it with ForScore.

Ive just started using dropbox and think its the shizzle.

If streaming is OK, you could upload to soundcloud and set the track to private and nominate e-mail addresses/users of people to access it. Slightly tedious.

Bandcamp could be used in a similar way, by setting songs as hidden but youd need to use and an account that youre happy for all of your collaborators to have access (theyd all need to login to the same account to listen/download).

Dropbox is the most elegant, really.

Sharing folders is good, but if I want to share a single file I have to put it in my public folder first.

Interestingly you can work around this by navigating to the file in the iOS app. There you'll have an option to mail a link to the file. The file can be anywhere in your Dropbox and the recipient doesn't have to be a Dropbox user to use the link. It's very handy but I suspect it might be a bit on the "beta" side as you can't duplicate that feature on the website.

DropBox looks to be the winner, but an alternative that I use for the same purpose:

http://www.mediafire.com/

Does exactly what you're asking for - great free service.

Won't be long until the FBI shut down Mediafire so...Dropbox!
