Softsynth Host suggestions?

Does anyone know if there is a Softsynth Host that is somewhat the same as how the Muse Receptor handles multiple VI's?

I was told that a close alternative maybe NI's KORE2 but I think KORE2 has been either been discontinued and/or not supported any longer (please clarify).

Or if there are any other suggests, please send them my way.

Thanks

Joel, just a suggestion, if you're going to be hanging out with us, you might want to spend a bit of effort searching for the info you're looking for. This topic has been covered numerous times here in the forum.

Clonk here for a search done for you, and take a moment to read the READ ME: Searching For Info On This Forum thread at the top of the forum. :thu:

Depending on your platform, your 2 leading candidates are:

1. Mainstage for mac (now available ad hoc without purchasing Logic)

2. Brainspawn Forte for PC

Also, if you do not need to be cutting edge with the latest releases, search on Muse Receptor. This is a stand alone unit.

I own Mainstage on a macbook pro and a Receptor. As a platform, I prefer Mainstage on the mac, but I use the Receptor as it has been rock solid for me as

well as being physically robust getting tossed in and out of my van. However, it will not install EVERY softsynth - you need to research what it runs, and decide if it is for you.

I downloaded the free version of Cantible to test it. My application is hosting Kontakt, Diva, OPXPro2 and various other VSTs on a Windows XP box for sequencing from Logic on my Mac Mini. So far I haven't found one thing I need that the free version doesn't do. I can chain or layer VSTs, select what MIDI channels they're received on and set up effect sends and it all works perfectly, I've yet to find any need to upgrade to one of the paid versions. (I will eventually regardless just because this developer deserves to be supported.)

@techeverlasting. Thanks...Oh Yea, I just checked out the Cantible features. That looks like exactly what I'd had in mind.

One thing that caught my attention was that you mentioned that use OPX-PRO2. I'm looking to use OPXPRO2 as an alternate for my OB-8. I have demo'ed the OPXPRO2 (Mac Reaktor Version) and noticed how extrememly CPU hungry it is. I need to be able to run multiple instances of OPXPRO2. Also, Peter at SonicProjects explained that the OPX was really optimized for Windows as many Performance features on the OPX are not implemented on the MAC Version. Though, I am 100% MAC-guy (MBP)and inorder to run OPXPRO2, I guess I'll have to aquire some kind of Windows Quad-Core i7 Laptop.

The reason OPX is so CPU hungry is that it calculates each voice separately, with the user being able to define how out of tune each oscillator and filter are, as well as deliberately miscalibrating envelope speeds from each other.

On my Windows XP box OPX Pro 2 is a lot less CPU intensive than Diva, I can get a few instances up with no problem while still using some big Kontakt libraries. The upgrade to OPX-2 was a big one, the plug really sounds "Oberheimish" to me now. Keep in mind that if you're running OPX on a Mac through Reaktor there's a lot of extra CPU overhead happening before OPX generates a single note.

If you're looking for VST hosting on a Mac the only answer is Mainstage, which is now dirt-cheap on the App Store. While I'm mostly Mac based I'm finding it worthwhile to have an old rack mount 32-bit Windows XP box on hand. There are enough Windows only plugs that are really interesting, including Vocaloid.

While there's a lot to be said for an up-to-date Windows 7 i-7 machine you can pick up a nice used 32 bit Xp box for next to nothing used these days. Load it up with the free Cantible, do an extra Komplete 5, 6 or 7 activation if you've got that and you have a very handy tool. It's easy to do all of those things without ever once connecting to the internet if you already have a Mac. Unless you're going to spring for some serious virus protection it's best to keep a Windows XP audio machine permanently off-line.

It´s all relative, but on my old and outdated Intel Pentium Dualcore D945, OPX Pro II rarely needs 15-20%, depending on complexity of patches and 6 - 12 voices.

Most of the patches want 7-12% CPU.

Hosts:

Cantabile lite

Reaper 4.14

Presonus Studio One Pro v1

Cantabile´s CPU metering is very differnt compared to other hosts metering,- so I use Windows task manager or Reaper metering.

Reaper metering shows CPU usage for each plugin and the host itself separately.
