Fishin' for Grips

Wally Malone

Recommended Posts

Some time ago both Jeremy and I suggested to Todd Johnson that he put together some educational materials covering his chordal style. He has had Fishin' for Grips out for quite awhile now and I finally got around to ordering it. Once I get it and spend a little time with it I'll let all of you know my thoughts. Now is a good time to order from Todd's site since he has everything on sale at 25% off.

Has anyone else here worked with this?

Steve, it hasn't arrived yet but I believe that one can use a five string but I believe tuned E-C. Since I keep my five tuned B-G I'll pull out my Alembic Orion six string which I haven't played in quite awhile.

I'll be interested to hear what you think about the book. I have debated getting a 6 and trying to learn the chord thing. I have quit all my bands/gigging this month and will just be playing at home and at church so I have time to "experiment" with some new techniques/skills.

Thing is I don't want to spend a lot on a bass - as I'm not gigging - and am not sure about a decent enough 6 string as it will need to play well if I'm going to be playing this style. Maybe a used Carvin....

Got it yesterday and spent a little time with it last night. Todd actually states in the book that it can be used with a four string but one should string their bass A D G C. I went over the harmonized scales in the key of C starting at the 12th fret and the melody note being on the top. Then the same for Cm and C dominant 7. Before going any further in the book and DVD I want to get these three things down in all twelve keys. Having not played my six string in quite some time I realize how heavy it is. When I was playing it regularly before I was a 190 pound power lifter. Now at 159 I can feel it in my back if standing or sitting on a stool where my feet don't touch the ground. I started playing the six two nights before this on my stool that is high and could really feel it in my back and could only play short sessions. Last night I used an office type chair without arms and was able to hang longer.

Cool. I'll be interested to hear your impressions. I'm still debating - a passive jazz or a fancy 6 to try all the "out there" stuff as its just me at home. I have found a sweet 34" scale Roscoe SKB 3006 which is unusual as 34" is a special order.

I loved the neck of the one I had before but thought it was a little too mid strong and the 35" scale is an issue for me. Maybe it was all in my head. As I'm not gigging any more, I'd love to try some of this chord stuff to give me something to do at home other than play through/practice the same old stuff.

The main thing is whatever bass is used he suggests having two octaves. Although he gives the grips in the key of C starting at the twelfth fret it could actually be done on any bass with one being aware of what key they would be in if there isn't a high C string.

Wally - I'll have a new Roscoe Century 6 in June. Wondering what you think of this book after some time has passed.

When I first got it I had some time to work with it and really like it. Since then I have had other things that have taken more of my playing time due to gig preparation.

It shows one how to harmonize melodies with the root on the top and takes you through the scales of Major 7, Minor 7 and Dominant 7. Knowing what you already know will help take you beyond what is in book after going through it.

I'm looking at selling my six string since it is too difficult for me to play now and replacing it with another five tuned E-C or a four tuned A-C. Maybe another Kubicki to have an option of an open low G.

I've always looked at the purchase of a this type of item as getting more material than one would learn in a typical lesson with the writer of the book/DVD. In addition the lesson would most likely have a cost beyond what one would pay for their product. In this particular situation I purchased it when Todd had his 50% sale on all of his materials during last December.

Here I am a year later and finally putting some serious time into this DVD. The two things that helped me get back int this was getting the Ibanez 6 string with the 14 mm spacing and then getting the Focusrite 2i2 digital interface and playing all through the computer using headphones. I've been playing along with Autumn Leaves (in a different key than normal for me), Mr. PC, C Jam Blues (Todd plays it in F), and I'm working on Misty. Cherokee is also included. My hands are getting a little more use to the grips and have been making sure to not overly push to avoid any injuries.
