JimboK
So I want to make the classic Christmas Bells from Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms), for instance. Layered sharp bells, stacked up like mad, some Delay? I don't know. I'm a newbie at sound design but I know enough to know I don't know enough. Can anyone help me with some tips? Operating from a Korg Kronos btw so assume korg combi capability. (I know, the gear is better then I am!) Korg Kronos 2 61, Kronos 1 61, Dave Smith Mopho x4, 1954 Hammond C2, Wurlitzer 200A, Yamaha Motif 6, Casio CDP-100, Alesis Vortex Wireless, too much PA gear! Synthoid
Have you gone through all the programs and combinations? There should be several bell sounds in there already... my Korg M3 has loads, so I'm sure the Kronos has an ample selection. You'll likely want to layer several bell programs in a combination, then try a little detuning as well as adding delay and reverb. When an eel hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a Moray. JimboK
Yeah, I did that and I'm not getting close the sound at all. I'll keep at it, as its affirming to hear you would approach it the same way. Tonysounds
Layer some glockenspiel with a vibraphone tuned up 2 octaves (the glock being the fundamental, and the vibe being the overtones), short room reverb if needed. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
Sven Golly
What program are you starting with? I'd start with Happy Kid Bells (something like that), and layer it 3 times with a variety of volume differences and pre-delay amounts, so they don't all strike at the same time. Note selection is going to be important as well; major chords or root-fifth-octave choices are the recipe for success here.
JimboK
Glockenspeils are the ticket! I would have never thought to use those. I passed right by them. I use a combination of hard glock and soft glock and those take to the reverb much much better. Tiny bit of delay and bingo! Thanks Tony (and everyone else) for the tips. Sounds pretty good now.
