CEB
I am doing more synth stuff. I really do not want to take another keyboard. I want to stay with only 2 boards. I play in a jukebox style cover band. We do pretty much anything people want to hear. I need a general purpose synth that can sort of handle a variety of stuff like Free Ride, Frankenstein, Tom Sawyer, Never Been Any Reason, Jump, Cars, Too Much Time on my Hands etc .... I'm looking at the Nord Lead 2x Rack online. It looks a lot easier to mount in my rack than the DSI stuff. Is the Nord a decent Swiss Army knife general purpose synth? I want to control it with the XK3c. The patchbank listings in the manual sounds promising but I can't find a video with good demo of the patch banks. The rest of my rig will be a S90XS which will control a Roland XV5050. And the XK3c will handle all the Hammond parts. Thanks. engineerjoel
excellent question. I hope someone credible can answer your question. I've never played the Nord Lead 2X, but I've heard and read many articles saying there is an excellent Bank of authentic sounding Prophet 5 patches. If so, then I would assume that the Nord 2x would definitely be a great 80's setlist workhorse of a synth. I too would like to hear from other Nord Lead 2x owners. Moonglow
I hope someone credible can answer your question..... Sorry, can't help out with all of these restrictions. I have a NL2X-R and enjoy it, but I really dig the Nord VA sound. It's very aggressive and cutting. Engineerjoel is correct about the Prophet 5 bank, which definitely captures the essence of the P5....but (of course) don't expect it to be a P5. It will easily do the 80's stuff. I often used a chorus effect and/or reverb with it because it does not have any internal EFX. Rack-mounting the NL2X-R in a typical rack takes up several spaces (forget how many), PLUS you have to add at least one additional space on top for the cables. I ended up having to get quarter-inch and MIDI cables with 90-degree jacks to keep the rack space to a minimum. For this reason, the NL2X-R may be best suited as a table-top piece. RABid
I'll second what Moonglow says. The Nord 2 line is agressive enough to cut through the guitars but it can also be hard to tame. You need an effects unit to smooth out the sound. This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
engineerjoel
Hmmmm,....Sounds like this thread could easily turn into...which sounds more like a Prophet 5: a Nord Lead 2x or Prophet 08? CEB
Thanks for the insights. I really appreciate them. It looks like the Nord will take 4 spaces I planned on using right angle cable and the space above it I was planning on being a redco audio jack face plates loaded with 2 way jacks. I am thinking there will be a clear 1 space are above the jacks on the Nord. .... I hope. It is an 8 space rack. I plan on carrying in it: - 1 space Furman - Roland XV-5050 - Shelf with Yamaha M102C mixer and EDI - Redco audio plate with I/O jack mounted on it. - Maybe the Nord. Thanks again.
