Richard W
I know many bassists cite "The Real Me" as one John Entwistle's finest moment as a bassist and make recreation of that line a personal touchstone of achievement. But this morning I turned on the radio and heard "Cut My Hair" and was blown away--again. Hard to describe what a fantastic line that is, as if Entwistle is playing a completely different song which nonetheless perfectly supports Townshend's melody. I then went back and listened to Quadrophenia in its entirety. Speechless. Thanks, John, for both inspiring me and making me want to never want to touch my bass again. Tom Capasso
I don't know that song - will try to listen today. I love the lead bass playing (as Pete called it) on Live At Leeds - especially Substitute and (oh my) Young Man's Blues. I like The Real Me (and we played it in Stonefly - I got most of it right...), it was never my fav Entwistle work. Will listen to some Who today. jcadmus
I always personally loved his playing on "The Real Me" -- all of it, not just the thundering riffs he played -- the best. "Tours widely in the southwestern tip of Kentucky"

Tenstrum
For me, nothing beats this live version of "A Quick One while He's Away". Actually, I love the entire performance of the band. Think it's one of the greatest moments in rock performances. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTUG49Uj-s0 Tenstrum "Paranoid? Probably. TimR
I looked at some YouTube clips for both tunes. I didn't realise that John was the musical producer for Quadrophenia! The whole band are credited as executive producers.. Feel the groove internally within your own creativity. - fingertalkin
Richard W
the amazing thing (well, one of the amazing things) about that isolated bass video is how completely relaxed Entwistle looks. A couple of times you can see him taking a deep, relaxed breath. All the energy's in his fingers. "Everyone wants to change the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves." DJR_Bos
For me, nothing beats this live version of "A Quick One while He's Away". Yes, this is the one that always did it for me too. Remember being a kid cranking The Kids are Alright on vinyl way up and listening to this one over and over. A couple of his licks from the first bit still find their way into my warm ups now. kenfxj
The showmanship was in his fingers as well. That and looking around as if he were bored while the mayhem from the other three ruled the stage. Push the button Frank.

I read once that the word he's singing is "cello," and that the reason he's singing that is because, when the band conceived this piece they wanted to have actual cellos playing but were told it would be too expensive. As a result, Entwistle starts singing "cellocellocellocellocellocellocellocello." "Everyone wants to change the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves." kenfxj
That entire The Kids Are Alright soundtrack is, IMO the best Who collection (even if it is lacking anything from Quadrophenia). You need the vinyl. The CD is missing the Join Together / Roadrunner / My Generation Blues medley. Push the button Frank.
