ewall08530
I have a question for those of you who are Electro 3HP owners and have used the sound manager to load/delete sounds. I just bought and started gigging with the E3 HP. I'd like to load the new Bright Grand sm piano. 43.8mb. If I understand correctly I could take out the Grand Lady D sm 39.2mb and the Electric Grand CP80 8.5mb and that would free up enough memory to load the Bright Grand. I'd like to make sure before I carry the HP up a flight of steps into my crowded computer room...lol ewall
MusicaL
Once you hook up the electro to your computer and fire up the sound manager, you'll know exactly how much room you have. But, assuming your math is accurate, sure, you should have enough room for the piano swap. It may be that you have much more untapped memory however so you may not have to remove any samples. Impossible to tell unless you're in front of your computer!! Happy schelpping! aL Gear: Yamaha MODX8, Mojo 61, NS2 73, C. Bechstein baby grand. ewall08530
Are you seriously concerned about hauling an Electro upstairs? Yeah I'll admit, it sounds a bit lame. I've a bad knee which is getting arthroscopic surgery end of Jan. Cortisone injection 2 weeks ago helps but...I'm being cautious. Going up steps carrying any extra weight is tricky right now. drawback
I'm enjoying this rare, lighthearted banter for a change. I have to say - I had no idea the latest Electro incarnation would be pressed to the limits of its memory so quickly. Couldn't the designers have ramped it up a bit, knowing they have some pretty large samples up there? ____________________________________Rod

Couldn't the designers have ramped it up a bit, knowing they have some pretty large samples up there? The Electro 3 and 3HP does a lot of things very well and can be had for under $3000.00. If you want enough memory to load more piano samples and larger versions of them or if you want to play more than one sound at a time, they want you to move up to the Stage2 series. I was tempted to get the Nord Piano 88 at first so I would have more memory and therefore more pianos to chose from. But I realized my biggest need was some of those Nord pianos + Organ + shorter, lighter keyboard. I'm very happy with my choice. I just think swapping the Grand Lady D out for the new BRight Grand makes sense with me doing mostly blues, rock, gigs. ewall
Dave Ferris
The Bright Grand is really nice - except there's some out of tune notes. Are you using the large or xl sample ? I've been using the large, I should try downloading the xl.... I hear some weird stuff going on with the lower octave unisons. In the context of playing it doesn't bother me though. I think I'm used to the imperfections in the tuning of a 9' piano. My piano is constantly floating around.... I'm more annoyed by weird phasing stuff-like on the lower register of the S90XS S6 piano. THAT bugs me.... Hi - I'm using the large version of the Bright Grand - you're right, it's mostly unisons in the lower registers. I'm not a fan of the Bosie unfortunately. I wonder if the XL is much better. It's not too bad but I doubt Yamaha would screw it up like that. Darren www.dazzjazz.com PhD in Jazz Organ Improvisation. ewall08530
So I brought in my E3 HP. and got it up the stairs last night. Not so bad. I then used the Nord Sound manager to load the Bright Grand (sm). I had to delete the Grand Lady D and the Shallow Rhodes to free up enough memory but it was an easy process. I forgot to check out the lower register bass notes for the tuning issue that DazzJazz found. I'll listen this weekend before the gig. I also deleted the Rain piano and loaded the Black Upright. I didn't change any sample sounds in the HP but... I hooked up my Electro 3 61 and loaded the Jass Bass pre-amped and the Plucked Contra bass. I like the idea of having a couple real bass sounds just in case I'm on a gig (with both Electros) and have to cover some bass for some reason. ewall

ewall08530
I tried the Bright Grand out on two gigs and was not that happy with it. No matter how I eq'd it it seemed a little too brittle for my ears. I tried changing the key velocity setting which helped a little but I on the 2nd gig I ended up not using it that much. Now keep in mind that I was using the smaller sample that does not have string resonance. But it just didn't seem to sound as good with mono mode on. (or off). I'm now trying the Concert Grand Close (Steinway D). I've loaded the medium sample (45.7mb) and auditioning it through my QSC K-10 which is what I really should have done when I loaded the Bright Grand. Anyway, I'll try it on some gigs and see how it sounds. ewall

zoooombiex
I ran through the piano samples recently on my E3. I thought the Bosie & the Bright Grand were both great in stereo. The Bosie in particular was really rich and beautiful. However, I was really looking for the sample that sounded best in mono for live use. I found all of the samples had a similar phasey sound to them, even when I used the "mono" button. Other people seem to love the mono button, though. (To me the phasing gives it a slightly cheezy 80's kind of sound, which I am very sensitive to...) FWIW, I thought the Bright Grand held up a little better than the other samples in mono. But I haven't been thrilled with it live - it came off a little thin. So I may go back to the Bosie and trade some richness for some phasing... I have the XLR samples of both loaded in and even in stereo they sound thin and phasey compared to the CP5. They record well but still lack body and fullness live..... They record well but still lack body and fullness live..... That could be. I've only listened in stereo through headphones. All the live trials were in mono, so I didn't get to hear how the stereo came through in context. I rarely use an acoustic piano sound live, so it's not worth bringing another board for me. But it would be nice to be able to throw it in here and there. That's why I think Nord needs to do some hi-res mono samples.

ITGITC
It's been said often, but I'll say it again... Why doesn't every keyboard manufacturer include at least one sample set that has been tweaked to sound ideal in mono? Don't they subscribe to Keyboard Magazine? Don't they read this forum? Don't they hear our pleas? Fools. Oh... Hi Dave Weiser. I'm not talkin' 'bout you. I know Kurzweil has a mono program or two in their latest boards. I'm fine with that...
