Russkull
For those who play upright: 1. Is there a difference in the range of notes (octaves) available on that instrument vs. those on the four string bass guitar? 2. Does the five string bass guitar add notes that an upright doesn't have? Just curious... Griffinator
What is this "bass guitar" of which you speak? Is this some new skinny-stringed invention that tries to sound like an electric bass? A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
jeremy c
A 5 string bass has Eb, D, C#, C, and B, five notes that n upright bass doesn't have. Many orchestral players have a C extension on their basses which gives them all of those notes except for the B. An upright can play higher notes than a bass guitar, but they aren't very easy to play. Maybe it's about the same if your bass has 24 frets, I'll have to think about that. Free download of my cd!. Michele C.
I should check, but I think that an upright's keyboard goes way upper than the 24th fret. It must be very difficult to play in tune up there. -- Michele Costabile (http://proxybar.net)

This is the instrument I was referring to. http://www.sonicftp.com/news/images/guitarbass_1.jpg "Of all the world's bassists, I'm one of them!" - Lug

Bob Gollihur
Depends on the size of the fingerboard of both. I'd guess an average bass guitar would be in the 20-24 fret range; the Kay URB ten feet away from me can sound a C above the second octave on the G (non-original fingerboard on a seventy year old instrument), though just barely, and that's too high for most of us to tread. A bass guitar's notes are a lot more accessible for the average player. Five string URBs are made, too, with either high C or low B, so fivers compare favorably. 1000 Upright Bass Links, Luthier Directory, Teacher Directory - http://www.gollihurmusic.com/links.cfm - Life is too short for bad tone -
