Road trip

Ok, so my crap is already set up at the casino. I start at 9:30 sat night. I've had no luck getting a Kronos shipped from Chicago to St. Louis (apparently, since they've never stocked one, they can't order one except through the distribution center where the're back ordered... Never mind that there are dozens in stock at branches throughout the country). So I'm gonna leave at 7am, drive 10hrs round trip, plus meals, purchase, and excrement time and buy a Kronos in Chicago....and hopefully make it back in time for my gig tomorrow night.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of a Kronos 61. Arlington Heights had one in the box, but I figured i'd call around on the way up and see what kind of a deal I could get on an open box. Called in order of driving distance. Naperville offered a discount, but it was missing a knob - hell no! Country Club Hills had one in pristine condition, and the guy there was super nice. Got it for $2599. Now I have to wait for the 5hr drive home to play with it (though I did run it through it's paces in the store - nice!!!)

New gear is exciting, but was it your intention to use the brand new Kronos 61 on the gig this past weekend? How did everything go?

I'd find it tough to use something just out of the box on a gig. I have to spend lots of time with a new synth to put enough of myself into it, before it sounds like me. Admittedly, I'm probably not any better at programming than the manufacturer's guys were. I just would want to know that my things are in there, that they are somewhat matched in volume and that I know where they are.

Oh, hell no! I figure it'll take a good solid month or more to get everything reprogrammed from scratch, new zone layouts, samples loaded, setup for voices controlled by the AX7, not to mention practicing the new layout.

The long time it takes to do all this is why I wanted to get started ASAP. My current rig is not as reliable as I'd like, and I don't want to waste time programming sounds for new songs only to turn around and have to redo - which means new songs are on hold until I've switched over.

A MONTH? Man up! I programmed 3 bands' repertoires in 3 weeks with a complete rig change.

Sadly, my hair stayed the same.

When I joined my current band, I started with a brand new rig and was up to speed in 2 weeks. But there's stuff that bugs me to this day that I wish I would have done better. This time around, I have the luxury of taking my time. I'm going to make sure everything is perfect!!! (plus I've never played a Keytar, so I'm figuring that'll take some practice).

If you decide to cut your hair, send it my way and I'll make myself a new mullet

Edit: incidentally, I'm waiting until I'm further along before posting a review. There are plenty of reviews of the factory sounds. I'm already finding some unexpected issues programing new sounds, but will wait until I am an "expert" on this board to give an informed evaluation since learning curve is undoubtedly a factor.

To be honest looking at all the sweet pics of your band from the past year, I think your rig was kind of due for an update. I think with this new configuration it's going to be utterly smoking! Can't wait to see/hear how it sounds. We should have a KC sponsored trip to go see your legendary band.

You should run them through a Speakeasy Vintage Tube Preamp -- you'll get more warmth that way.

After Chicago's 9.75% sales tax, I don't know if I afford it!
