Most of my main sounds come from VSTs running on a Muse Receptor. Never had a crash or any problem, always get excellent low latency, and love it!! I do have a 2nd Receptor as a backup though, just in case!

On most of my home gigs i only use my Nords. But when i do fly gigs, i carry my XV2020 and my Mac/Mainstage. Usually the Mainstage goes to the upper controller (provided from the production) whether the XV runs on the 88 (usually a Nord Stage, which i use for the pianos/e. pianos).
Be grateful for what you've got - a Nord, a laptop and two hands

Let's solve the 50% question.

Have you ever used VSTs for a live gig?

Inasmuch as the question is far too vague to be a clear metric (for example, I don't consider Hamichords to be a true "yes" to this question, and Receptors are questionable). Specifically, the question should be closer to "do you currently use a laptop or other computer in your live rig, using virtual instrument software?"

That being said, however, how's the count?

This is what I was trying to get at, probably poorly.

The count is closer than I would have expected... :o

PS

Doubt I have for english speakers to solve: "would expected" or "would have expected"? (I missed that day of class)

Non c'e,

You're using a conditional tense. Seems to require a conditional clause, "the count is closer than I would have expected if...". Simpler, I think, would be "The count is closer than I expected it to be."

The "would have" needs some kind of condition. Here is a link:

Conditional Perfect

Anyway, I admire you use of English and curiosity about it. The only Spanish I know is "Cuidado! Piso mojado!" from the mop buckets at the Shop Rite.

Can't say I agree with your screen name, though! :)

Joe

Joe, your interest in Spanish is admirable. I wonder whether non c'e futuro speaks much Spanish, given that his nom-de-web is Italian.

LJ,

Now that you mention it, when I did the google translate on it I did it for Italian.

"There is no future." :o

Anyhootle, my Spanish assumption was based on his location being Spain.

Regardless, I've never used VST's for a live gig. :)

Regards,

Joe

I use them all the time. If you are careful with setting them up correctly in your host software, you can get some great sounds with tons of editing capabilities.

However, I still think that there is nothing more reliable then good 'ole hardware!

But, my MacBook Pro is on stage with me for every gig, and generates all of my organ, synth, mellotron, and horn parts.

I have had great results with Propellerhead Reason 4 as well as the iPad using garage band, Crystal Synth and Alchemy. I have used this setup in both live concerts and more casual worship bands. Note: the Mac platform running Reason 4 is much more stable and responsive compared to the Windows version. And the drawbar organs with rotary control are the coolest part of the iPad GarageBand setup using the Alesis Io Dock

I'll reply to that, since I have a similar setup.

We play festivals, casinos, and the occasional wedding and bar gig. No, I don't hide my Mac from the audience; in fact, mine is prominently displayed on a music stand. Why do you ask - fear of theft/damage?

Not theft/damage worries - questions from audience members where it's not a stage/theatre type show and they can get close to you.

When I was gigging my VST rig I seemed to be approached every couple of gigs by people keen to let me know that they can see the laptop and know we're all "just miming."

O/T I enjoy talking shop with other keyboard players of course - just never seem to meet any round here. Met my first one this year a few months back as I headed into a session for a local band. Saw him lugging out a Yamaha Tyros and shouted "hello, don't run away, another keyboard player, I'm not alone."

Nice guy. He used to play with a UK outfit called Danny Wilson - wrote their hit "Mary's Prayer."

I find the posts about the MBP interesting..Ive been trying quite a few boards looking 4 something that sounds good and is playable..have a MBP sitting there that I loaded LP and MS on a few months ago, never really tried it...so I crank it up, there it is, has the keyboard sounds in it, plug a usb board into it, works..can it be that easy? Id be willing to try this if I could find a decent controller, or should I say a controller that I would like..

If you're nervous about its reliability, use a regular hardware-with-sounds as a controller, and take an instrument cable. I found that presonus audio interfaces work well. That's just my mileage. I haven't had any trouble -

I've had that problems as well, I've even had other musicians I know really well accuse me of triggering all the bass lines, among other things, off the laptop. My response has been, c'mon, if I was doing that, do you think I would have programmed all those mistakes into the track?
