timwat
Playing straight jazz tonight, sitting in with a dance/covers band Saturday - some cool party on a private beach front thing. Some of you guys do this sort of thing every gig for a living, but it's literally been years since I've played standard covers band fare like "Play the Funky Music" and "This Time It's Real". .. Synthoid
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at Ameristar Casino - which is nice because we set up Friday, tear down Sunday, and get paid for 3 full gigs! Ah, what a life. My outdoor concert last Saturday night was cancelled due to the storm, and nothing musical is planned for this weekend, just a family get-together. Still waiting for a friend of mine to finish assembling a sound system so we can get a new band started now that I found a lead singer. When an eel hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a Moray. Michelle ggurl
Had to cancel my gig Saturday, which is kinda a bummer because I really could have used the musical outlet with the stressful stuff going on in my life right now ... but I suppose with all I have to deal with it's just as well. Very close to finishing up two compositions that have been nagging at me for a while so hopefully I'll get those done. There's that ... And, Congratulations, DanS! Time to go drink wine and chill out. Happy Labor Day weekend, ever'body! Stay safe. eric
I have a gig tonight with a new project that is an offshoot of my main band. Pretty much the same members, but substitute a gal singer, different bass and one guitar player with a mostly new setlist. We are playing an outdoor party that should be a fair amount of fun. Otherwise, I've been focusing on continued yard cleanup after Irene and just got internet back yesterday afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone! I have some studio work this evening to lay down a new tune I wrote. We'll see how that goes and Sunday I may go to Morehead to hear the A friend of mine play. JohnH
Doors tribute gig yesterday during the day at the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet, (which is about 3 miles from where I live. Place was packed. This is a Mexican neighborhood and they love the Doors so we could do no wrong. Another Doors gig was tonight at our new weekly gig in Malibu, two sets only, because Lou Adler's son's band was taking over the place. Having watched the Senna doc last night I spiced it up on the way there by taking the Sunset blvd Nurburgring style road course from the 405. NewImprov
No gigs this weekend, but doing a lot of music-related work this weekend. The psychedelic Latin band I've been playing with for about a year and a half will have its last gig later this month, our main percussionist is moving to Brazil, and we decided to record and release a CD before he leaves. We just finished tracking all the instrumental tracks last week, 9 of 12 tunes, and I am mixing those this weekend. One more session tomorrow to finish vocals and a few overdubs. This is the fastest I've ever had to turn a CD around, so far it's going according to schedule, but it's a lot of work. Fortunately my wife likes this band, shes had to listen to me mixing for the last 2 days straight. J. Dan
Ok, so the weekend's pretty much over, so how did your gig go? For us, friday was a little slow (which was fine with me given my technical issues). Saturday was pretty slamming with multiple bachelorette parties. Sunday (tonight) was interesting, played the same casino as fri and sat. Normal gig is 9:30-1:15. Tonight was supposed to be 8-12. At 8 there were 2 people. Btw - for the last 6 months, most days have been over 100 deg and humid, today was 70's. Around here, people take advantage of what little good weather they get any way they can. Anyway, 20 mn later there were 50 people. We started 40 min late (per direction of the casino) and by the end of the 1st set, a fan with a bachelorette party of 15-20 had showed up to bring the crowd to a total of maybe 200. Not great compared to the 500-600 we'd have on a typical sat night, but not bad for a Sunday holiday weekend with nice weather. Better yet, we kept the crowd and added, so that it was slammed at the end of the night. The food and bev mgr and general mgr for the casino were in attendance. Dan Acoustic/Electric stringed instruments ranging from 4 to 230 strings, hammered, picked, fingered, slapped, and plucked. Analog and Digital Electronic instruments, reeds, and throat/mouth. CEB
Here is some picture I took yesterday. I got a digital camera as a gift this year and started carrying it in my car. You never know when you might see something interesting. The Sunday gig reminded again why I quit playing a Hammond. In the Midwest you used to do a lot of gigs on top of trucks. Trucks can be pretty darn tall with no steps or ramps ... like this one. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/DSCF0030.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/DSCF0033.jpghttp://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/DSCF0034.jpg Played through some Berhinger powered speskers. I was surprised. They sounded better than I expected. They sound better than KC-550. I think they are about 600 watts each and cost about $280 ea. But they are not QSCs. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/DSCF0035.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/DSCF0036.jpg "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!!
