Somebody at Malaco Records in Jackson, Mississippi. The record was produced by Wardell Quezergue.

The same producer and I assume the same band also gave us Groove Me by King Floyd.

Oh yeah, great groove! I'm pretty sure that was Duck too.

Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it.

I thought Duck too, but that bridge shows more chops than I've heard from Duck. It's actually very Jamerson-like..

Oh I don't know Dock of the bay has a similar groove like that bridge. Don't underestimate the power of the Duck! ;)

Mmm, you think so? That, I'm not hearing. The bass in Dock goes along with the basic rhythm, whereas on the bridge in MBS, it's very contrary and syncopated. Also, the bass is pretty loose in DOTB, and in MBS it's extremely tight.

DON'T FEAR...THE REVERB! 60's Instrumentals with MORE BASS!

I agree DOTB is a bit looser but the bass line in the versus had a similar feel to me only the drum beats have a different movement to them. Imagine that bridge with the DOTB rhythm. Then again I may be way off.

I was going to guess David Hood, but those songs aren't listed on his credits anywhere.

Meanwhile, I wrote a letter to Malaco Records. Maybe someone there remembers.

That's cool. I'm curious. If not Duck I'd like to know who did that cool line.

We have the answer directly from Malaco Records.

William LaVerne Robbins..."Vernie", played bass on almost all Malaco recordings, including all the King Floyd and Jean Knight releases, for many years up into the mid-to-late 70's. Vernie died of a brain tumor in the early 80's.

Hope this helps.

Burton Doss

It looks like I was wrong again. (Big surprise there! :) ) Some sweet bass line though. What a pity he died what seems like an untimely death. RIP Vernie, and thanks for the great grooves!
