BiC Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 This was my first pedal: http://www.arionpedals.com/Arion-Stereo-Metal-Master-Effects-Pedal-p/smm-1.htm My lil' sis loaned my original to her boyfriend back in 1988 while I was away in Basic Training. I never did get it back. So, I figured it was time to recapture some early tonal memories. Caevan O'Shite Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I used to have an Arion Stereo Flanger, and would LOVE to have one again. Even if I had the wherewithal to buy a BUNCH of cool, high-end and boutique flangers (and even if I got back the TC Electronics Stereo Chorus/Flanger that I erroneously loaned to someone who, it seems, is NEVER going to return or replace it), I'd still want and use that Arion Stereo Flanger; it got some REALLY cool flanging sounds, great for over-the-top craziness! BiC Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Check and see if you can get it- (I can't access here @ work): http://www.arionpedals.com/ If so, it probably isn't much more than $40. BiC Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Thanx Scott... I already ordered myself one. This was my first pedal: http://www.arionpedals.com/Arion-Stereo-Metal-Master-Effects-Pedal-p/smm-1.htm My lil' sis loaned my original to her boyfriend back in 1988 while I was away in Basic Training. BiC Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Kev, just looking at Google Shopping, I do see where Arion sells one for $45.00. I also see one (80's issue) on eBay for $59.99. Don't know if there is a difference in pedals there... "Treat your wife with honor, respect, and understanding as you live together so that you can pray effectively as husband and wife." 1 Peter 3:7
Caevan O'Shite Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Hey, how cool izzatt?! I had NO IDEA that they were being made again- or had they never STOPPED being made? Replacement knobs, even! Down the road, when I can even afford that (for me, that may as well be $450.00 right now!), maybe I'll get another one! Cool! Thanks for posting that! BiC Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 It just arrived... and I played it through the same Laney I've had since 1986, which has been upgraded with a celestion speaker since then. I could've sworn it sounded much cooler back in 1988. It probably did compared to what was around at the time. Perhaps it will become my first lab project as I experiment with pedal mods/builds... BTW, it reads, "Designed in Japan", "Made in Sri Lanka". Caevan O'Shite Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Yeah, I've since found out that some, perhaps all, of these are not quite the same as the originals; the original Orion Chorus pedals go for quite a bit these days, but most of the rest of the line is still just cheap used gear. Still pretty cool all-around, though. Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
BiC Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 I tell you what... I've gotta a really great tone (IMHO) going for me when I combine that new Fillmore Thunder with the Metal Zone. Guitar-FT-MZ-Amp Front It sounds really good through my SS Laney. Caevan O'Shite Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Cool. How 'bout with the Arion Metal Bastard? I mean, Master? Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
BiC Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Tried that MM all around the chain... sounded like crud. It is only decent as a stand-alone unit... with my stuff. Now, it may sound like magic through that Mark V... Cool. How 'bout with the Arion Metal Bastard? I mean, Master? Junior 1 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I had an Arion Tubulator a while back that I sold. Sellers remorse! Just recently picked one up on the Bay in like new shape. I really like the way it pushes my Epi Valve Junior.
BiC Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 You know, I wasn't thinking straight when I purchased the Metal Master through Arion. My original that I purchased around 1986-87 was made in Japan, and this new one I received was made in Sri Lanka. No wonder it doesn't sound like the way I remember. Different circuits, I'm sure of. Larryz Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Buying or renting pedals for pure nostalgia, sounds like a great idea...very cool Take care, Larryz
Caevan O'Shite Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 That's too bad. On the other hand, if I understand correctly, the old original Arion Stereo Flanger that I would love to replace someday, goes for a much more reasonable price than the Arion Chorus pedals go for; apparently their old Chorus pedals are hot "vintage" items, while the rest of their line is just "used" and "old". Caevan O'Shite Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Hahh! I've found that old, original '80s-vintage Arion SFL-1 Stereo Flanger pedals can be found for not too much more than these new ones... Old, original '80s-vintage Arion SMM-1 Metal Master pedals must be out there, and I'd bet go for similar prices, if not even less... BiC Posted March 22, 2011 Author Posted March 22, 2011 Let's try this again! I just nabbed this on eBay. This one is "Made in Japan": MM Not too shabby for $22. Caevan O'Shite Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Let's try this again! I just nabbed this on eBay. This one is "Made in Japan": MM Not too shabby for $22. Nope, not too shabby at all, Rod. Let's hope that you like this as much as or more than you remember liking your original one years ago... Heck, you might be able to sell off the new one for as much or more than you've just paid for this old one, recouping some of your expenditure chasing this memory... BiC Posted March 22, 2011 Author Posted March 22, 2011 Well, I spent $40 for the new pedal, and nearly $10 for S/H. Maybe I can recup about $30+ of that. But, like I said earlier, I may keep it for any future pedal experiments. Let's try this again! I just nabbed this on eBay. This one is "Made in Japan": MM Not too shabby for $22.
