skipclone 1 Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 I've heard there are casualties near the epicenter. Trains here are stopped-glad I took a bicycle to work. Mobile phone service is down. Winston Psmith Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Skipclone, glad to hear from you, brother. It looks really bad, from what we're seeing over here. Take care, and check in when you can. skipclone 1 Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Thanks so much everyone. Lots of services are shut down. It's late now but we have no idea what we're going to wake up to tomorrow. We're still getting some mild aftershocks but it could get wild again at any time. I'll try to keep everyone updated. pinkjimiphoton Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 sending love and prayers to you bro, and all the peeps in japan and elsewhere being affected by this. be safe, stay well and thanks for keeping us posted!!!!!!! http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
LeftyBlues Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Terrible tragedy Skip, the entire world is watching and praying for all of you in Japan. I was born at night but I wasn't born last night...
Junior 1 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I just set up a Skype account last night so my wife and I could communicate with our daughter who was supposed to leave for Tokyo on Sunday! Needless to say, her trip has been canceled. We're thinking about you Skip.
d halfnote Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 With modern communications it's easy to forget that the world---& I mean the real world, not just human society---has always been & likely always will be a place that operates in a more or less continuous way. There have always been catastrophies happening but we usually didn't hear of them constantly, if even at all, b/c of time & distance. Now everything's a constant onslaught of competitive news alerts. Look how things flip from Libya--->Charley Sheen--->Earthquakes--->Lindsey Lohan(d)--->what's next?... The fact that humans do have the potential for some serious, even potentially Earth-ending technological disasters up our sleeves (where they'll stay, we all hope) generally pales beside what the world itself can do in it's "self-corrective mode"...& most events in the natural world (weather, geological shifts, etc) are such things. I don't mean to downplay the real losses in human terms but let's recall that entire species disappear regularly, often without our notice (though often with our help). Optimism remains the best approach. d=halfnote
Boggs Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Videos looked absolutely horriffic... Prayers for you and all of you affected. Apparently, a tsunami surge in Oregon swept a man to his death... BiC Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Yeah... I heard that guy was out there to take pics of the surge. Pure stupidity on his part. Videos looked absolutely horriffic... Bluesape Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Glad you're OK! Stay safe, bud! Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!
S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq. Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 That's the main reason I logged in tonight....to make sure Skip is OK. "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!!
skipclone 1 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Really appreciate all the good wishes guys. well elevators are still out. I have to get on a train soon but I don`t know how much of the transportation system is active. Some years ago I visited that city where the epicenter was. there is a really nice hot spring resort where I stayed with my coworkers. There is a shopping area in a shotengai, a covered walkway. There was a music store, it was the first time I saw Heartwood guitar straps. UPDATE: Well getting on the trains was a REALLY bad idea. And it is far from over, now I am hearing about an explosion at one of the nuke plants. They may shut down the powr grid, meaning no internet. If I`m offline for a while that`s why. I think we`ll be okay. Sure would like to know which way the wind is taking the `no danger to the public` radiation... Bottom End Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Damn, isn't this how Godzilla got his start, a radioactive cloud? "Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.'-Hamlet Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.
skipclone 1 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Indeed, although at the moment I`m thinking more of how we could end. One friend is already stocking up on iodine. He also said salt slows absorption into the thyroid gland. I happen to have a box of sea salt. Today I saw some people buying so much food, clearly they were thinking about an extended problem. Any other good antiparticle advice out there? Same old surprises, brand new cliches- Skipsounds on Soundclick: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=602491
BiC Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Japan is going to be screwed for the foreseeable future. I'd be on a first plane to *anywhere*. "Treat your wife with honor, respect, and understanding as you live together so that you can pray effectively as husband and wife." 1 Peter 3:7

TuskBuffer Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Skip--what city/prefecture are you in? Even though it sounds like you were not directly affected by the devastation, no doubt things are going to be tough for some time to come. All the best to you. Winston Psmith Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Sad to say, if anyone has experience with radiation, the Japanese people do - monitor any public health/safety announcements, check the wind direction, and make plans to get elsewhere if you have to. If there is radiation headed your way, get to shelter, and stay out of the rain! Keep in mind that iodine is toxic, above certain levels, so it isn't a case of the more the better. IIRC, it's iodized salt you want - not sure about the content of sea salt. There's more substantial info through Google or Ask. Our thoughts are with you, brother. Keep us posted.
