bassbuddy Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Hi guys, Hope all is well. I landed some great gigs playing bass for some of the legends, and was approached by Yamaha for an endorsement to play one of their basses. I never played a Yamaha. Does anyone have a preference or can anyone recommend a specific bass? I need a 5-string that is meaty and full, but sounds good when you thump. I also prefer a wider neck compared to a thinner neck. Thanks in advance. Best, kENNy http://web.mac.com/vibechekmusic/iWeb/site/Home.html www.vibechekmusic.com
Seamy ALB Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 No advice but lucky you!! http://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Little-Bitter/185235472447
The Geoff Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Plenty of scope in the BB Series. Also have a play at a Nathan East. G. b5pilot Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Congrats on the endorsement! Yes try a Nathan East model. Or one of the BB series. Yamaha basses are not so much my cuppa for looks but they do play and sound very nice. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Griffinator Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I used to have a BB5 - loved that bass. Wish I'd never gotten rid of it. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Basshappi Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 The BB series is very good and may fit your requirements. Congrats on the endorsement deal. Nothing is as it seems but everything is exactly what it is - B. Banzai Life is what happens while you are busy playing in bands.
5 string Mike Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Will they let you try out a few? Consensus here is go with the BB, but try a few models out. And congrats, very cool. kenfxj Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Congrats my fellow Kenny. That's very cool. I like the BB415. Simple, comfortable and sounds great. (I'm a passive bass kind of guy). I even dig the color... http://itiswhatever.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/yamaha-bb415.jpg Push the button Frank.
Tenstrum Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I have a Yamaha RBX765A that I absolutely love. However the newer RBX series aren't that great. Tenstrum "Paranoid? Probably. jeremy c Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Get the Nathan East model, but have them rename it the Kenny bass. Congratulations! Free download of my cd!.
butcherNburn Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Cograts man! Take your opportunity to play as many as you can. I can't help much on advice, I've only played one Yamaha and it wasn't good but it was most likely just that one instrument and the fact that I was playing it. If you think my playing is bad, you should hear me sing!
bassbuddy Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Jeremy..!! (and all the other gentlemen). Thanks for the encouragement. Kinda digging on that Gold BB415 bass posted above. Sweet looking bass, and betcha it sounds good too. Kinda pinching myself to see if this is real. I am playing bass for Dennis Lambert, (google that name to see his hit songs). He saw me play a gig when I was backing up Larry Hoppen from "Orleans", and wanted me to be his bass player. We are doing shows with artists that he wrote songs for. They come out and sing 4 or 5 tunes. It is so cool. Artists include: Mickey Thomas of Starship Tavares Peter Becket of Player Christopher Cross etc. Thankful here, kENNy http://web.mac.com/vibechekmusic/iWeb/site/Home.html www.vibechekmusic.com
Bottom End Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Good for you, see if they'll give you the color of your choice. "Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.'-Hamlet Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.
jlrush Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Congrats Kenny! I had a TRB5 for a while and liked it a lot. It has a wide neck like you mentioned and can go very deep if you want. Lots of tones in that bass, but I've heard the older ones (90's models) were the best. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r170/63p-bass/100_0475trbbody.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r170/63p-bass/100_0475trbhead.jpg Visit my band's new web site. www.themojoroots.com
Nicklab Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 +1 on the TRB basses. Every TRB I've ever played has been pretty damned good. And the necks are pretty wide. And congrats on the endorsement deal! Chad Thorne Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Tshaka Mayanja ("tshakazblackroots" here on the LD) really like and plays Yamaha basses. You might PM him or check out his website, blackrootsunlimited.com.
bassbuddy Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Thanks for being so helpful guys..!! Dennis texted me tonight and told me Yamaha wants a model number soon, so I will go to a dealership this weekend to see how the BB Series feels in my hands. Still love that gold one. Have a great weekend. Best, kENNy http://web.mac.com/vibechekmusic/iWeb/site/Home.html www.vibechekmusic.com
davebassman Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I have a 1990 BB5000A and I think it's a great bass. Nice wide neck, on the heavy side at nearly 11lbs though. There's a new series of BB (Broad Bass) that Glenn Hughes is playing. http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/guitar/bb/
Michele C. Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 The BB614 I have bought is quite a good instrument, powerful and thumpy. Mine is fretless, but while I was shopping I tried a passive five string BB415 and it was very growly and rich in bottom end. Classic P and J sounds. The flagship here is the BB3000MA Michael Anthony signature. The TRB line of five and six string basses is more high end, the flagship being the Patitucci model TRB JPII. These are barky and modern humbucker sounds and premium quality construction, neck though in the top models. The Nathan East BBNE2 is a piece of beauty, if you like it white. Two octave, skinnier than the others. -- Michele Costabile (http://proxybar.net)
EddiePlaysBass Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I played a TRB 6 string for a good while. Great neck, loved the feel. Did not love the tone of the bass though, it was just too goody-two shoes for me. She and I were not a good match. "I'm a work in progress." Micky Barnes The Ross Brown Shirt World Tour
Michele C. Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Ah, Kenny two more things. First is that Yamaha really does not have lemons in its lineup. Yamaha instruments might be cheap but in all cases I have tested they give you more than you would expect for the money and then some. Re-reading your short list I think that that golden fiver could be described as meaty and full. My own 615 sounds to me almost as it had two neck pickups, definitely not as airy as the BB604 I had before, a 24 fret J style, in the style of the Nathan East model. Endorsing a BB would be bringing on stage something that the average Jo might actually buy. Second, is that you must be really happy to be in your shoes these days. It's great when it happens and sure it must be great for you now. -- Michele Costabile (http://proxybar.net)
groover Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 If I got a Yamaha endorsement I would be all about the BB2025X. Check it out !
Alberto Rigoni Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I had a TRB 6 strings and it was pretty good! congrats for the endorsement! EddiePlaysBass Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 If I got a Yamaha endorsement I would be all about the BB2025X. Check it out ! That is actually a great-looking and awesome-sounding bass "I'm a work in progress." Micky Barnes The Ross Brown Shirt World Tour
Michele C. Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Hey bassbuddy, what did you choose? Let us know when it's done. -- Michele Costabile (http://proxybar.net)
Buckeyebassmastr Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Hey Kenny, I used to have a Yamaha TRB~1004 w/AAA Natural Quilted Maple. Out of all the basses that I've played over the years, that one was only one of maybe three after all these years that I wished that I had kept. The other two were my custom made-to-spec Carvin that I special ordered and my '77 P Bass with blonde maple body, neck & fretboard. I sold them a few years ago when financial times got tough and I still kick myself. Please let us know what you decide on with Yamaha... many of us are pulling for you! Good Luck! @~OLD BASS PLAYERS NEVER DIE... @~WE JUST FADE AWAY CARRYING OUT MUCH LIGHTER... @~MICRO~MINI RIGS... With Sound Mind & Questionable Morals/Ethics, Warmest Regards, BUCKEYEBASSMASTER
