PinStripe Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Anyone have any experience with a Warwick TubePath 10.1? I've been thinking of buying a used one OR I am liking the new Carvin B2000. I wonder how these two amps would compare. I know the weight is a huge difference with the WW being 41 pounds and the Carvin I think around 15 pounds or less. Any thoughts on this??
_Sweet Willie_ Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I have not played the Carvin head. I generally haven't been pleased with Carvin bass amps. HOWEVER, I haven't played any since about 2003 or 2004 (before I moved back to the east coast). I have played a TubePath 5.1. It sounded killer. (Worth the weight, in my opinion.) I use a Warwick Quad preamp. It kills, too. However, different strokes for different folks. robb., wherefore art thou? Peace. --SW spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. PinStripe Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 Hey thanks for the reply! Carvin has really stepped it up in the bass dept in the past few years and the B1500 was their best selling bass amp of all time! The B2000 is suppose to be as good without the weight and more watts. What kind of music do you play regularly, that you loved the Warwick TP?
rumpelstiltskin. Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 i played a B1500 a few years ago. it was way better than the carvin amp i sold a few years before that. like the sweets, i use a warwick quadruplet preamp. it is the most realistic tube tone i've ever played through that isn't a full tube head. the tubepath uses the same topology circuit, so i would imagine it sounds equally phenomenal. it would be worth the weight to me, too. robb. because i like people.
_Sweet Willie_ Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I play a variety of music. The TubePath head I played belongs to a friend who plays everything from classical to jazz to rock to funk to blues with it. (He also uses a Warwick Quad preamp, too.) I didn't gig with it, but put it through its paces with Led Zeppelin, jazz standards, Ben Harper/Juan Nelson, Chic, and others. Peace. --SW spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. rizzo9247 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I've played through the tubepath, from what I recall it was really nice, but out of my price range (it was around $1700 IIRC)
Mark Schmieder Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Yes, Carvin has stepped up their game -- I have played several of their recent basses as a friend who is an instructor has several and uses them for all of his beginning students. Having wasted a total of over $12,000 on Warwick junk during the 90's, I cannot recommend that brand unless you just want one to hang on the wall to look at. Seriously, I would buy ANY brand before a Warwick. They put cheap components in $3000-$4000 instruments. Every Warwick I ever had (five total -- I'm a slow learner), was in the shop almost constantly. Not to mention the uneven tone across the neck, if you go for a through-neck design. Eugenio Upright, 60th Anniversary P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35, D'angelico SS Bari, EXL1, Select Strat, 70th Anniversary Esquire, LP 57, Eastman T486, T64, Ibanez PM2, Hammond XK4, Moog Voyager
PinStripe Posted March 22, 2011 Author Posted March 22, 2011 Thanks for your reply, but I was not referring to their basses as I am now a die hard P bass fan! I was referring specifically to their amps and many guys on several forums seem to all agree that the WW TubePath is a great amp. I will most likely get one. Here is a couple of videos with a guy playing on a TubePath 5.1 - he is running from headphone jack to computer (USB). Sounds great to me!

As PinStripe has already pointed out, this thread was really about amps and not basses. But, that aside... I'm sorry you've had such a poor experience with Warwick instruments, and, honestly, I'm surprised that you had poor experiences with multiple Warwicks and your critique indicates that it wasn't just about your preferences in tone, feel, etc. of an instrument, but actual quality issues. I don't have a Warwick, and they're not really my cup of tea. However, my experience with the brand has been much more positive, and I believe there are several on this forum who have found Warwicks to really work for them. One of the sweetest playing and sounding fretless basses I ever played was music-man's 5-string Thumb fretless. Plus, m-m sounded killer on the instrument, which is what really matters. (Sadly, music-man does not frequent the forum any longer.) getz76 (also no longer here) had two Warwicks that I've played that, also, I found of good quality. As far as I know, he has not had to bring them repeatedly into the shop. There is a Warwick shop/showroom in downtown Manhattan that I keep wanting to visit, but I haven't made it there yet. If I do make it down, I'll report back on instruments, amps, and cabinets that I try out. Anyway, my point is that you may be overgeneralizing your experiences w/ Warwick. Peace. --SW spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.
rumpelstiltskin. Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 this sounds pretty representative of the quad, too. if you like the sound and can handle the weight, i support the decision. as a complete side note, i had never heard of jessie J until i saw her on SNL. i was impressed. she is better live than the overproduced pop record sound of the recording. robb. because i like people.
PinStripe Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 I have had several WW basses and thought the quality was on par with the price I paid. I actually liked them. But I am now into the P bass and am not looking back. But I am still curious to what some Carvin users have to say about the B2000. Also, I spoke with boomer of Dana B' Goods the other day and he had told me that the TubePath is not a very road worthy amp. He said if you yourself are the only one to handle it and you baby it, it will do well for you and the sound is pretty good. But he said if you ever have any roadies or anyone else handling the amp, he said you better have a back up that's not a TubePath. He recommended I go with the Extreme 10.1 but I already had that one and it was very bassy, boomy and no top end clarity. I was playing through a 410 Dr. Bass cab. So who knows. But I ended up selling the amp AND cab after trying with the band I was in at the time. Besides, I don't know what the big rave of Dr. Bass cabs is anyway. I tried 3 different cabs of theirs back around '07 and did not like Any. But now I hear that Marc @ Dr. Bass rips everyone off! wow... Regarding members of this board leaving... I think it is easy to leave this board behind since there isn't much action on here. I have noticed that to get an answer to your new posts, it's been good for me to post and come back maybe a month later and even at that, I only find a few whom have posted. On talk bass, you will have sometimes 20-50 posts over one nights time! The rulers of this board should really do more to promote it to help get this thing really rollin! Just my 2 sense (cents).
rumpelstiltskin. Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 odd for a distributor to slag off their own products. robb. because i like people.
