Steve LeBlanc Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I don't like Phil Collins bashing, he didn't start the fire. I also don't like many of his recordings but overall, I'm a fan. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
KenElevenShadows Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Fantastic drummer. I feel bad that he's down on himself and people bash him so much. I read an interview in RS a short while ago, and it was really sad, him feeling so hated and everything. He said that at one point, he actually thought of suicide, although never coming close to actually carrying it out. Phenomenal drummer, and it's sad that the guy can't even play the drums anymore. Dana. Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 I don't like Phil Collins bashing, he didn't start the fire. You're right. Billy Joel did. He should quit music, too.
Joe Muscara Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Those classic Genesis days were great, weren't they? Even later, when they forced "The Longs" on the fans who thought they were a pop band, they had their moments. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Hoo hoo!" - Daffy Duck "The good news is that once you start piano you never have to worry about getting laid again. More time to practice!" - MOI
Dana. Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 Fantastic drummer. Not at the Led Zeppelin reunion at Live Aid! You're on stage with Zep and you didn't even bother to learn the songs? Fck off.
Steve LeBlanc Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Fantastic drummer. Not at the Led Zeppelin reunion at Live Aid! You're on stage with Zep and you didn't even bother to learn the songs? Fck off. right, he clearly wasn't sure when the drums were supposed to come in on "Stairway" but that whole performance was a travesty, Phil didn't ruin anything by himself. Besides, I heard he was kinda' pressured into playing with Zep on that show...y'know the whole, "we're gonna' fly you in on a Concord so you can make a big spectacle of yourself, trust us" thing. Cocaine is more responsible than any one person for how incredibly lame the mid-80s were. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Right, because Tony Thompson wasn't capable enough.

Jim Alfredson Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Phil Collins is one of my favorite drummers. The work he did with Genesis is outstanding. To think all that music (Nursery Crime through Abacab was made by kids in their 20s. Amazing. I mean, I'm going to be 34 in May. By 1981, when Phil was just turning 30, he'd already recorded 9 records with Genesis, some of which are pinnacles of the progressive rock genre and also redefining how drums were recorded in the process, a killer debut solo album, performed on Peter Gabriel's first and third solo discs, recorded with Peter Banks, Brian Eno, Rod Argent, Daryl Hall, and Robert Fripp, and he wasn't even really famous yet! He didn't hit the "bit time" until the mid-80s. If that's a failure, then the rest of us are fucking losers, including myself. He has nothing to apologize for. Sounds like he's really depressed, which is a shame. Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
FJR Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Huge Genesis fan. Didn't care for some of the later cheesy pop tunes (the 'Tarzan' soundtrack makes my teeth hurt!) but always admired his musicianship, and his ability to write the pop hook. I have the Genesis Over Europe dvd and the 'behind the scenes' extra disc is great! Bummer about being forced out by medical reasons...

Fck off. He may have screwed up or not learned the songs, but that doesn't change the fact that he was a fantastic, talented, phenomenal drummer. He's done thousands of gigs drumming flawlessly, so I don't know why we have to go dig out the one time that he screwed up. I mean, that's amazing to me that you would do that and then tell him to f*ck off. No, he doesn't have to f*ck off. frogmonkey Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Speaking as a compassionate human: I feel for the guy. Sucks to quit drumming because of health issues, and it sucks to feel hated. Speaking as a hard-working grunt musician in the trenches, struggling to make ends meet: boo-frickin-hoo, cry me a river. Either way, he is overly-maligned. There are awful hacks out there who deserve our withering scorn. He isn't even close to that category.
Synthoid Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Those classic Genesis days were great, weren't they? +1 I've been a Genesis fan since the late 70's when I bought "And Then There Were Three." I later picked up a few earlier albums... and always enjoyed Tony Banks' amazing synth work, which has been a huge inspiration for my own music. I never was a huge fan of Phil's solo work, but I enjoyed some of his tunes. Really sorry to hear about this. When an eel hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a Moray.

Dana. Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 The guy is a multi-millionaire, has enjoyed tremendous success, and has MANY fans. Not sure what he has to be depressed about. OK, so you can't play drums anymore. Jason Becker can't play guitar but he's still making music. Roger Ebert can't speak but he's still expressing his opinion. Man up, Phil!
MonksDream Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I wish I could fail as spectacularly as Phil Collins did! I sort of expected to hear of him getting depressed ever since reading about health problems preventing him from playing drums. At the time he seemed to shrug it off but who among us could take never playing our favourite instrument again in stride? Especially when you are acknowledged as one of the best? I wish him well and hope he finds some peace and happiness. Instrumentation is meaningless - a song either stands on its own merit, or it requires bells and whistles to cover its lack of adequacy, much less quality. - kanker

Right, because Tony Thompson wasn't capable enough. I know, MTV were a bunch of kooks then and still are. There are many Phil moments that make him easy to hate on but if you look at the bulk of his life/career...he's practically a god. Let's make fun of Herbie Hancock when he can't play anymore(?)...he gave us Rockit, will he please quit music. In general I get the joke D, Phil's 80s career/persona has always been good for a laugh. BUT well, the fact that Phil really can't play anymore and has to announce publicly that he's given up trying...it makes me really sad and I don't find the jokes funny right now. xoxo http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Steve Force Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Nothing against Phil and I like most of his music. But come on. If you are physically unable to do something that you use to be able to just accept it and move on. We all have to. Even Phil Collins and Brett Favre.
