burningbusch Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I am in need of guidance with using release samples with the EXS samples. I've created the instrument using Redmatica's KeyMap Pro and have the release samples as their own group. When I bring them into EXS I need to: 1) Be able to control the overall volume of the release group. 2) Program it so that release samples don't trigger when you let up on keys when the sustain pedal is depressed. 3) Program it so that when the sound decays, the release sample is reduced in volume accordingly (you can't have a loud release sound when the sustain portion has died down to nothing). I've been able to do all of the above in Kontakt and Structure, but I haven't worked much in EXS. Thanks for any help. Busch.
BP3 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Maybe some format converter would take your Kontakt samples and make a useful EXS-24 version. I hope that Logic 10 will have a much updated software instrument update.
kanker. Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Have you poked around in the EXS24 Instrument Editor? Load your sampler instrument, click the Edit button in the upper right corner of the EXS24 GUI http://www.kevinanker.net/exs.jpg You can adjust the volume of the release group in the Instrument Editor. Click the Groups button. In the Mixer section of the Instrument Editor in Groups view, you can adjust the overall volume of the Group. http://www.kevinanker.net/exs1.jpg If you have the Group set for a release trigger, you can access a decay time control by clicking the Dc button and adjusting the Time parameter to the immediate right. Unfortunately, release samples do not have access to Amp envelope offsets. As far as 2 goes, make sure you can see the Select Group By parameters in the Instrument editor http://www.kevinanker.net/exs2.jpg If you look to the right, the top group is the piano samples, the bottom is the sustain samples. Set your release sample group up like the regular piano samples are set in this case and you should be good. Not totally sure on #3 yet. Perhaps create Velocity layers for the release samples? You can then adjust the relative volumes of each sample in the Instrument editor in Zones view (click the Zones button next to the Groups button), then hopefully they'd trigger relatively properly. I'm working on a book on programming logic's synths right now, and the EXS24 chapter is up next, so I may come up with a better answer, but I may not.... Hope this helps A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.

burningbusch Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 Tinder and Al, thanks for the links. The way KeyMap Pro works is it's this advanced sample instrument creation tool that allows you to export the same instrument to Structure, Kontakt, Reason and EXS. In fact it originally did only EXS. So I am able to get it out in EXS format, it's just that you still need to tweak to get the release samples to work properly. I had to do the same thing in Kontakt and Structure. KayMap gets you maybe 95% there. Thanks Kevin for the detailed info. That's exactly what I looking for. I will try it all tomorrow. That helps tremendously. Busch.

Again, I hope this does what you need A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.
