Steve Force Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 FYI: Monster bassist Stanley Clarke will be at Waterford, Michigan "Motor City Guitar" Mar 19! Marty, the owner, has these cats on a regular basis (this is where I caught Michael Manring a few years back.) Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites
b5pilot Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Whoa, thanks for the heads up. I'll have to investigate this! Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Steve Force Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 Anybody else except for me attend? Stanley is a wonderful teacher and his upright and Alembic/Ampeg chops aren't bad either.. Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites
b5pilot Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Sadly, I couldn't make it. Also Victor Wooten was at the Ark on the 19th. I had a gig so I couldn't make it to that one either. No doubt both shows would have been awesome. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Groove Mama Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Sadly, I couldn't make it. Also Victor Wooten was at the Ark on the 19th. I had a gig so I couldn't make it to that one either. No doubt both shows would have been awesome. I can do ya one better, b5: I saw Victor and Stanley in a double bill Wed night in the Chgo suburbs. Through some type of divine intervention (lord knows it wasn't due to clean living), I ended up in the front row, sitting right in front of Victor and then Stanley. Sadly, they did not play together, but it was an amazing show. Stanley was the guy who made me fall in love with bass back in the '70s, so I had been jonesing to see him for, what, 40 years. Somehow, I had absolutely no idea how he could wail on upright. Still can't believe it. Queen of the Quarter Note "Think like a drummer, not like a singer, and play much less." -- Michele C.
b5pilot Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 In the front row?! Ok now I'm jealous. The stuff I could have picked up on just by watching those two would have been great. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Big Daddy from Motown Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 OOps that was yesterday. I hope it was cool.
Groove Mama Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 The stuff I could have picked up on just by watching those two would have been great. You, maybe. I just sat there with my mouth open, going, "Wait. WHAT?" Queen of the Quarter Note "Think like a drummer, not like a singer, and play much less." -- Michele C.

Steve Force Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 Sadly, I couldn't make it. Also Victor Wooten was at the Ark on the 19th. I had a gig so I couldn't make it to that one either. No doubt both shows would have been awesome. Stanley and Vic are touring together with their bands so indeed it was the same show. Stanley had to split to head to AA to get ready for the Ark gig. In any case, it was highly enriching for me to hear/see Stanley explain then play URB and electric bass. Well worth the price of admission (Free! ) Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites
bassic jams Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Thanks much to forceman for the heads up - drove from Lansing area for the clinic and it was SO well worth it. Too bad the Ark show was sold out well ahead of that night. Counted about 200 there at the clinic - got a few good photos (and a signature on my School Days LP). Aside - saw Victor (and the Flecktones) in Kalamazoo a little over a year ago. Had a seat in the front row on Victor's side. Very cool!
Steve Force Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 Sweet! I saw a guy walking back in to Motor City Guitar" in with a "School Days" LP after the clinic ended--perhaps that was you? BTW: First time at Motor City Guitar? Did you have a chance to check it out? The owner, Marty, is a great guy--knows the business and will deal (fairly.) bassic jams Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Yes on both! I didn't want to bring the album in until I knew he would stick around, so I thought I'd wait in line and see if he had enough time before the Ann Arbor show. This was my first time there - what a candy store! Poked around for awhile but had to get back. Around here we have Elderly Instruments - a different feel, but some amazing toys.
Steve Force Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 Well then, IMO you have seen the two of the very best guitar stores in this area. Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites
