noobie Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Yamaha graciously sent a keybed replacement Any help with installation tips and/ or tricks would be appreciated. There was an older thread on a different forum but the links for the pics are no longer working. TIA.
GREGHUX Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Try Youtube. I know there is a video for key replacemnet and other maintenance on a 'clavinova' which should cover the P80. There are lots of other relevant videos too.
MoodyBluesKeys Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 My firm was an Authorized Yamaha Service Center for a while. This is not specific to the P80, but in general (most all of the keybeds are similar in design. The instrument has to be disassembled carefully. It is best to have a good size workbench area, and cover said area with blanket to make sure nothing gets scratched. There will be screws holding the instrument together, and there are screws that hold the keybed in place. It's been a few years, so I don't remember exact locations. Things to watch out for: Remember that the weighted keybead is rather heavy, so don't remove all the screws holding it without planning for its extraction without causing damage. There will be cables and connectors between the keybed and circuit boards, disconnect carefully - mark them so you know which one goes where and which way they fit. Yamaha used to authorize my firm 0.5 hours to change a keybed, it is no where near as time consuming as having to replace individual keys. General static sensitivity of electronic circuits - don't touch components on the circuit boards more than absolutely required. I used a grounding wrist strap (or sometimes a alligator clip cord connected to my metal watch band) to keep me and the instrument at the same static potential. The keyboard should NOT be plugged in to power. If you do have difficulty, it is possible to order a service manual - you may have to go through an Auth. Svc. Center to order, and they are not cheap. J_tour Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 QFT with the above -- I used a P80 for a few years, and I still have it for a little scratch pad and maybe give to my toddler-aged nephew. I got the replacement action and, rather than wait for my local tech to get around to installing it, I asked him to just give it me when it arrived from Japan (or wherever). There are a shit-ton of screws on the bottom to get the housing off, but once you're inside, it's pretty much plug and play. You know this, I'm sure, but do keep track of where all the screws go -- it just fits, as I recall. Don't worry about it, is all I'm saying -- it's pretty easy, and I had a MUCH harder time replacing the LCD on an older notebook computer. Just make sure it seats correctly, and then drive the screws -- not hard at all.
JpScoey Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 do keep track of where all the screws go. ^ ^ ^ THIS. ...if you don't keep track of where the screws came from/go back to, you're in for a major headache! MuzikTeechur Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 More importantly: HOW DID YOU GET THEM TO SEND YOU A REPLACEMENT? I have a P-80 with several sticking keys, dead keys, etc. Would love to use it again. Muzikteechur is Lonnie, in Kittery, Maine. J_tour Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I think I e-mailed or called a support number from the Yamaha website asking to buy some replacement keys, and some nice lady got back to me with "Why do you want those keys? Who told you you have to buy them?" and after getting my address had the action sent to a local authorized service provider, free of charge. I had to bring in the old action to him, and after asking nicely he let me have the new one in the box so I could just pop it in myself. Also, I do remember that getting the housing off and on was a real PITA -- it has to slide on just right and it seemed there was a risk of breaking something if it wasn't done with care. The action itself was easy -- and do be careful with the electrical connectors, is the only other thing I can remember. Of course a few months after using the new action, it got thirsty and drink a big glass of wine. Was never the same after that. So watch out if you have the WC Fields model of Yamaha that I do.
