Dana. Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Just picked this up for $30, on sale. I think it's a great all-purpose Rhodes, and the interface couldn't be easier. I A/B'd it with MrRay73 Mark II and Lounge Lizard Session and much prefer UVI for realism. Based on the look of the "skin" of the stand alone player, it seems to be derived from the Rhodes in MOTU's Electric Keys. Anyone else using it? UVI EP
marino Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Sounds lovely. A bit too much mechanical noise if you ask me. I hope that's adjustable. Oh well - I'm on a PC anyway
Dana. Posted February 26, 2011 Author Posted February 26, 2011 Yes, it's adjustable. The bell attack, a bit prominent in the demo, can also be toned down.
Mizu Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Thanks for the heads up D-Bon - just installed it (the App store makes these impulse purchases too easy...). Sounds really good. For those interested, here are two screenshots of the UI: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13003692/UVIMain.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13003692/UVIDetails.jpg "You'll never be as good as you could have been, but you can always be better than you are." - MoKen
Steve Nathan Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 So is this the same as the MOTU Elec Keys Rhodes or a new instrument? Don't rush me. I'm playing as slowly as I can! http://www.stevenathanmusic.com/stevenathanmusic.com/HOME.html https://apple.co/2EGpYXK
pizzafilms Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Is this just a standalone? Or is it an Audio Unit or VST plugin?
Sven Golly Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Is this just a standalone? Or is it an Audio Unit or VST plugin? Ermmm.... it has been suggested that I'm a little harsh with newcomers, so let me be gentle. If you click on the link that is provided in the first post in this thread, about halfway down you'll see a link to a PDF file giving you instructions on how to use this software with Garageband, Logic, etc. Hopefully reading that will provide the answer to your question above, and not cause you too much distress (either reading this response, or actually reading the contents of the linked page & PDF file). Hope you're having a wonderful day!
Mizu Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 So is this the same as the MOTU Elec Keys Rhodes or a new instrument? I can't compare it sonically to the MOTU Elec Keys (don't have those), but from screenshots it seems to be a scaled down version (no presets, no sync-to-tempo for tremolo/phaser etc.). It is not a VST/AU/RTAS plugin - it's a stand-alone app. To record it you have to open it in parallel to your sequencer and route the audio to the seq input (the documentation recommends Soundflower). Yo Sven, I'm happy that you're tryin' to turn over a new leaf, and I'mma let you finish, but Dave Horne was one of the harshest with newcomers of all time.

Hope you're having a wonderful day! Well then, thanks for going easy on me. Yes, I did download and read that PDF, but it seemed like it was for complete newbies that wouldn't even know what an AU was anyway. That's why I thought it was worth asking someone who already bought it...maybe it also came with the AU as well. Anyway, that's a shame. I'd like to use it in Mainstage. Seems a waste they wouldn't have that option. Sounds just like what I was looking for.

Sounds just like what I was looking for. At this time at least, the Mac App Store limits the kinds of apps and things a developer can sell through it. Perhaps someday it will allow certain kinds of plugins, but right now it is limited to applications AFAIK. I am guessing this factored into UVI's decision about how they packaged this product as just a standalone app. If it is MOTU's Electric Keys, you could get that if you want a plugin. I realize there is a price difference. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! orangefunk Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I just installed this on a whim and for the money its a great app... however it doesn't sound too great off the bat I have to admit. It's quite close to the RD700GX Supernatural when you mess with the amp... Still for the price you can't grumble...

I realize there is a price difference. UVI SoundSource does sell these as plugins in more of a piecemeal arrangement. I have both MOTU EK and the UVI stuff and I believe it's all the same. I don't know if this is exactly like the app store Rhodes, but it could be. It's $39 and you run it within the free UVI Workstation product (VST, AU , RTAS). It does require an iLok (as does MOTU). There is also a Retro Keys product which has many of the same keys that are in MOTU for $129. http://www.uvisoundsource.com/images/Image/classicelectricpiano.png Mark I Rhodes Retro Keys Busch.
burningbusch Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Pizzafilms, You really should get Scarbee Mark I first, IMO. $79, no iLok required. NI Scarbee Mark I Busch.
Mark Schmieder Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Yeah, what Busch said -- those of us who use DP have known about these for awhile, because they were offered to us on special discount due to MOTU's arrangement with UVI as an engine for some/most of their VI's. So this latest form factor is probably the same sound set, but NOT the same as MOTU's Electric Keys, which involved additional sampling sessions to cover a broader range of e-keys. I haven't used MOTU's Electric Keys so don't feel qualified to comment, but I do now own MOTU mach Five, and would say the electric keys from UVI that are contained therein, are a step up above the ones provided for free (as of recent versions) in Kontakt, in terms of playability. One thing to remember with Rhodes in particular is that there are significant differences between the different models, and different vendors have chosen to sample different models for the most part, so it isn't necessarily redundant to buy more than one of these e-keys libraries. But the Scarbee set is the deepest so far, for what it does. There are some recent one-offs such as a Mk II library that was announced on KVR last week, which I haven't listened to yet. There's also the modeled stuff from Italy (the vendor changed names recently and I forget their new name), which is/was free (I think it's donationware). Eugenio Upright, 60th Anniversary P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35, D'angelico SS Bari, EXL1, Select Strat, 70th Anniversary Esquire, LP 57, Eastman T486, T64, Ibanez PM2, Hammond XK4, Moog Voyager
