boycalledsue Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I have been playing through an old 4x12. Turns out it has 1968 celestion g12 50's in it (I'm selling it so I opened up the back). I always thought it didn't work below my "low G" on a four string bass. The resonant frequency of that speaker is 90Hz, G is 98Hz. interesting. The maid's gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer Oh what a terrible place is a pub with no beer
TimR Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 You're an octave out. Low G is around 50hz. The resonant frequency is the frequency where the speaker is most efficient. The speaker doesn't suddenly stop working below the specified frequency range. The bottom frequency is usually specified as the 3dB point. So even if the frequency range of a speaker is specified as 80Hz to 5kHz then it will still operate below 80Hz but might be 3dB quieter at 50Hz and maybe 3dB louder at 110Hz. It all depends on the speaker characteristics. The cabinet will probably have more of a bearing on the actual low frequency response than the speaker.
