Get The Led Out

Ladies and Gentlemen

I saw the Zep tribute band last night at a casino. They were very good, singer was wonderful.

But the kick drum was silly-disco loud. I mean, like, the whole night was a kick drum solo. Relief came during the acoustic set. Then the relentless kick drum started back up. Foam ear plugs were so far into my ear canals I had a tough time getting them out, but they had to be that far to provide room for my fingers.

OK, so we were kinda close to the subs. But when I walked around the venue, the kick was silly loud everywhere except out in the lobby, where it sounded pretty good.

Peace

Hammer of the Broads is a great Zep tribute band, well worth hearing.

It's disappointing that the kick drum was so poorly mixed, too much of that is definitely too much.

Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.

It's a common problem these days. Some sound men don't have an ear(which is not new), and some that do have succumbed to what amounts to a fad in sound mixing. I keep hoping that it will die out, but every so often, I hear another story about a concert ruined by overmixed bass.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Sound guys always start with the drums and often seem to think that getting a good drum sound is the reason why they are there.

I actually went to a show in a medium sized club where the band asked that the sound system be turned off. The band sounded better without it.

Soundmen usually start with the drums because they're one of the most difficult instruments to mic up. But in most small to medium size rooms, the bass drum is the only one that actually needs a mic.

I disgree. As with any piece of gear when used appropriately they can sound great.

EQ is #2 on the list.

Loud kick is for dance. I see no reason for it in a Led Zep tribute band. Soundman is most probably "acoustically challenged" in the brain.

Really? At a club show? I thought that the ridiculous kick sound thing was reserved for stadium and arena shows. That's where I've heard that more often than not. And it sucks there, too.

This is absolute truth and the reason that now days if I am playing a gig that is using a soundman I have a very direct talk about that exact issue.
