Dave Ferris Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I've posted the fact that I'm a huge Nat Cole fan before. Just saw this in the Times, pretty cool. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/02/nat-king-cole-remembered-the-nat-king-cole-show-available-for-digital-download-on-itunes.html The words, humility, understated elegance, class come to mind when thinking of Nat. Somehow the same cannot be said last night while watching the Grammys on hyper-fast forward. I think I set a record though, the Grammy Show in under 25 minutes. Btw Hank Jones often cited Nat and Teddy Wilson as early inspirations. I also read in one of the articles on George Shearing the other day that he was also influenced by Nat. https://soundcloud.com/dave-ferris https://www.youtube.com/@daveferris2709 2005 NY Steinway D Yamaha AvantGrand N3X, CP88, P515

longfuse Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I don't use itunes, but this might tip the balance. I have the complete box set of the Nat King Cole Trio's stuff...gold!
Legatoboy Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Dave, I remember this as a kid in re-runs in 58-60', the show only aired for one year, 56-57' I believe. I was born in 54'. My parents kinda pointed him out to me as a kid as someone to take note of when watching the tube. Nat, Errol Garner and Louie are all in the same room in my brain! They were all on TV in the late 50's and often. Thnx, Tony CP-50, YC 73, FP-80, PX5-S, NE-5d61, Kurzweil SP6, XK-3, CX-3, Hammond XK-3, Yamaha YUX Upright, '66 B3/Leslie 145/122

I also read in one of the articles on George Shearing the other day that he was also influenced by Nat. Not to mention Oscar Peterson who always cited Nat as a big inspiration. LX88 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Even Bill Evans said Nat was the Cat. I combed through the Mosaic box set looking for unique material, and there was plenty of it from the early days of the King Cole trio. One of my favorites he did was a tune that ( I think) was written by Irving Berlin called " After You Get What You Want You Don't Want It" - which may have a certain amount of relevence for people on this forum, you never know....
BP3 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 We acquired and aired the show on BET Jazz for a number of years. GREAT show. Most of the audio was done with only 3 mics and the show sounds great. The copies we had were pretty damn clean. I hope they are working from the same tapes that we received.
ProfD Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Nat King Cole was definitely as smooth as silk as a musician and singer. Every time I hear NKC, I just dig. PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Ahbez "Nature Boy"
davyyd Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Classy man. I have no doubt this has been posted before, but it is relevant stuff so I post it anyway: [video:youtube] I love how happy they both are doing their thing. Makes me happy to watch. davyyd
