pinkjimiphoton Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 i built this thing outta parts in my junkbox...works great, i actually built the circuit on a piece of cardboard, lol...very lo tech. the only changes i'd make would be to maybe put a 1k resistor in series with the input (to help with rf interference) and maybe mess with some of the resistor values... anyways, i like it...hope you do, too. note:strictly entry level here, don't expect a tychobrahe or something. http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt137/pinkjimiphoton/burnttoastieoverdrive.png http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
Caevan O'Shite Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Very cool! I take it that you can switch between the LED and silicon clipping? Please go into greater detail on the sound and the effect of the controls, too! Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
pinkjimiphoton Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 yah, in my opinion, the led's are a little crunchier, and the silicone clipper's a little bit more distortion + -ish. the difference is actually pretty subtle, believe it or not...i was expecting a bit more of a difference. the gain control is basically just a gain control...it cranks up the input level to the single transistor and makes it clip...think volume control. this is like a real overdrive, it hits the front of the amp pretty hard to make the amp distort more. the balls control is just a master volume. you can think of it like a master volume on an amp...the lower it is, and the higher the gain is, the more distortion you'll get. if the balls is pegged, it'll overdrive the amp. it's a simple booster is all really, with a clipping circuit added. very brown and warm sounding, try it out and see if ya like it...it's an easy build, really, i suspect you could probably (if you're better than i am at building stuff) wire it all point to point between the switches, jacks, and pots if you wanted to. you can build it on a piece of cardboard like i did, or use veroboard or something....that would be easier and probably be a little more stable...the prototype one i built sounds great, but can oscillate when your volume control on your guitar is off. some people may find that kinda cool. i'm looking into remedying that tho, and will probably add an led to the circuit too when i get some 3pdt switches in that i ordered. if i get around to it, i'll post another crummy schematic when i get it done. like i said...don't expect sonic perfection, just have fun with it, learn a little something, and feel free to experiment some. just make sure the transistor you use is an npn, if it's a pnp you gotta wire up all the electrolytics backwards. since i don't know really what i'm talking about yet, stick to the npn's. you may wanna replace some of the resistors with pots/trim pots so you can dial it in more precisely. if ya need parts, google mouser, allied electronics, parts express etc, or hit small bear electronics or general guitar gadgets. anyways...hope someone has a little fun with it, and if ya work out any of the bugs, let ME know, ok? lol i will try and up an mp3 of it if i get a chance. peace. http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
A String Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Hey, very cool! I'd love to hear a clip of this! Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music

pinkjimiphoton Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 i just found this thing on uncle beavis's amazing website.. http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/HIW/hiw1.gif it explains the functions of various parts, which may help ya roll your own... beavis? head here for some cool stuff... http://www.beavisaudio.com/ as for clips, i'll try to upload something later, i moved recently and don't have my DAW connected, and i am getting my ass kicked by this nasty fugging flu that's going around... so bear with my surly arse a little while longer please.. lol http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
pinkjimiphoton Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 here's some really bad mp3's...tried using my vista laptop, and i can't even hear the damn file while recording it...arrrrrgh. but here's a couple real short samples, for what they're worth... 9 files, a clean/led/silicone version of essentially the same scale, riff, and power chord. they are mono, and sound like shit, but i think you'll be able to get an idea of what this thing does. this computer thing is pissing me off!!!!!!!!!! god...what a pia!!!!!!!! oooops...forgot the link http://www.sendspace.com/file/1ksetc http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
Griffinator Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Other than the digital clipping from hitting the soundcard input too hard, it gives a pretty good picture of how the thing sounds. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
pinkjimiphoton Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 sorry...i am really out of it atm.... that was my fender mim fat strat, bridge pickup into the pedal with both knobs cranked on the box. i just am not up to hooking up my tower and all that goes with it to record, so it's into a korg ampworks on a relatively clean setting with a hint of reverb. the dry recordings are pretty quiet, and not clipping as they are being recorded...the pedal on is a lot louder, kinda hard to illustrate plugged into a pc that you can't even hear for some reason, lol.. recorded with audacity 1.3.4 i think... again, sorry peeps, i am kinda outta it atm... http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
Caevan O'Shite Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Cool, thanks; unfortunately, that "Send Space" deal didn't want to play nice with my crappy computer and snaily dial-up ISP connection; I wanted to give it listen. I'll have to wait and try it on a friend's machine and high-speed innanet sometime... GREAT thread, by the way! pinkjimiphoton Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 hey caevan, the file is less than a megabyte, if ya wanna download it...probably take about 5 minutes on dialup, the 9 mp3's are only a second or two apiece. http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
Caevan O'Shite Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Hehhehhehh! "Really bad mp3's"... They was mixeded with love, they wasn't bad... Cool; you must be having fun with that... hard to tell much difference between the LED and silicon sounds by those clips, but the basic flavor is conveyed... Plus, you made it on a piece of CARDBOARD... what could be more betterer low-tech cheepniss than that, except maybe if it was made on a piece of gingerbread or a take-out pizza-box or somethin'? pinkjimiphoton Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 Hehhehhehh! "Really bad mp3's"... They was mixeded with love, they wasn't bad... Cool; you must be having fun with that... hard to tell much difference between the LED and silicon sounds by those clips, but the basic flavor is conveyed... Plus, you made it on a piece of CARDBOARD... what could be more betterer low-tech cheepniss than that, except maybe if it was made on a piece of gingerbread or a take-out pizza-box or somethin'? lol...a piece of a saltine box...i almost called it the saltine overdrive, but with my normal rig burnt toast sounded better. the cardboard thing is a trip, next one will be on perfboard instead i think. i think the cardboard is where it gets it's "smokey goodness"... lol... the mp3's are what they are, for some reason i can't record audio and listen to it on this pos hp laptop. even tried updating the drivers and codecs, no dice. so i couldn't actually hear what was being recorded, but that may be a good thing in this case. the only molestation is fading in and out just before the audio...no compression or anything, other than the compression from the mp3 encoding anyways. i do have to modify it some tho...if it's like the only toy hitting the front of an amp, it's ok, but if it's before my fuzzface clone for instance (wayyyyyyyyyyyy too lazy to build a new pedalboard, so stuff's spilled out all over the floor in both directions again, lol) it will oscillate at about 500k if ya turn the knob of your guitar all the way off. unacceptable! but kinda groovy... the point is, this is just something i slapped together with junk from my junkbox, and i figured if i could do it, hell, somebody else could probably get it right. check these links out for some interesting topics...and be sure to explore the attached websites... http://geofex.com/ http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/ this guy on ebay sells cheap (i mean cheap) pcb kits, they're like 99 cents for most... http://myworld.ebay.com/diyeffector&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID i built the xuper hardon boost (probably my fav, most used pedal, and he sent me the pcb/schem/layout for free) the silicone npn fuzz(face) and the delta fuzz...all real nice. the kits are cheap, but you have to source your own parts for them. they work out to about 30-40 bucks per pedal, but if ya decide to buy some of the parts in bulk, you can do a little bit better. the most expensive parts are the dpdt or 3pdt switches...you can buy them in bulk on ebay, but remember that the quality of some of them is pretty low coming from the far east...and the hammond style boxes. and before ya know it, you'll be rolling your own. and learn about a completely different kind of "gas"... peace http://www.sweetrelief.org/ https://www.wepay.com/donations/memorial-stone-for-juliane-pocius
