I am gonna replace the pickups in my mim strat. So I was just gonna wire a whole new pick guard. So I will need new switch and pots. What brand and who sells high quality switches and pots. I bought one recently from Stewart McDonald and it has static when you turn the knob. I want better ones then that.
Why do you lay down? I say that it beats standing up! whats got you feeling so down? I hold up my empty cup!

Go here and scroll-down the list to be sure what size and type of pot-shaft is required for your guitar if you want to order individual parts;

Choose between their Complete Vintage Strat® Style Electronics Upgrade Kit

and their Complete Modern Strat® Style Electronics Upgrade Kit,

if you want to get all necessary pots, switches, jacks, wires, caps, and a wiring-diagram for wiring up your guitar.

If you prefer to buy specific individual components (such as if you don't need another jack, and want only pots, caps, and switches), the descriptions of those two kits make an excellent reference-guide for component type, taper, and value selection.

In the meantime- try spraying a spritz of Tuner/Control Cleaner (NOT contact-cleaner or WD-40) in that pot, from the opening in the back where the terminals are, and fully rotate it back-and-forth no less than forty full rotations (eighty or a hundred and twenty being better and better yet). This SHOULD clean and clear that pot. Also be sure that all connections are proper.

EMG..

IIRC, EMG used to make some incredible rigs, both pre-wired harnesses, so your just had to mount everything onto your pickguard, and complete mounted pickguards you could just drop in, with just that one solder joint behind the back plate to do. BUT . . .

Early MIM Strats were cut & drilled differently, so regular Fender-type replacement parts didn't fit - that included pickguards, at the time - newer MIM Strats fit most standard replacement parts - YEMV, as they say.

Interesting so far! Maybe a little more info would help? What I am going to do is put in 3 Seymour Duncan pickups in. SP90-1 vintage in the neck, SSL-1 vintage staggered in the middle, SM-2 custom in the bridge. I am attempting to build the perfect guitar for me. So this is my flavor. I love the p-90 sound in the neck. For the bridge I wanted a humbucker. So blindly I had my fiend play me samples and the Seymour Duncan mini humbucker was my blind pick. Them middle I don't use much, but its a strat so I might as well put something in there so I picked the single coil staggered. I have already looked and I will have a small amount of routing to do. And I need a custom cut pick guard. My wiring will be like a strat except only 1 tone and it will. Ontrol the bridge pick up only. I never use tone on the neck or mid. I am kinda partial to the small high cut you naturally get by turning the volume down. OK now I am ready for some ideas. Thanks in advance! By the way I really like the idea of those kits!

Yeah, you definitely don't want the pots that come with active EMG pickups for this project- wrong values.

The older MIM pickguard holes didn't line up so the EMG drop-in required some easy wood drilling, so I'm told...mine were dropped into 3 made in USA Strats and lined up perfect...I'm not that good of a tech'ey and so I liked the active prewired EMG versions and all 3 of mine worked great...on my H/S/S Strat I really like the single master tone and master volume controls set down a little lower from the 1st string, as it keeps me from accidently bumping the volume knob when strumming out of control, although some guys may like it close for volume swells...

The only thing I suggest to watch out for when using singles and humbuckers or hotter pups, is unbalanced volumes as you switch between the pups...some research on how to balance the volumes might be of value so you don't have to cut or crank the volume every time you kick in the Humbucker or hotter bridge pickup...IMHO.

Take care, Larryz
