moj Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 She rocked the Grammys. Finally a female singer with real original talent. Check out her conceptual album "ArchAndroid" clips on YT. Prog Funk Psychedelic Chill She and Bruno Mars, another great talent from my home town, will be touring together. [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwWNjgfv2hU [video:youtube]
Dana. Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I don't know about "finally," but yeah, she's terrific. I saw her open for Prince at Madison Square Garden in December.
johnchop Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Check out the Letterman "Tightrope" performance. Man alive. I make software noises.
Tonysounds Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I have 2 words: James Brown. I didn't see the Grammys, but I've seen her on late night TV. She's definitely happening, and her stage presentation (at least the one I saw) is great, but owes an obvious debt. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
Bottom End Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Janelle Monae is very talented, can actually sing, seems to be a dynamic performer worth paying to see live. There are also YOuTube clips of her doing informal songs with simple accompaniments, she has the pipes, but doesn't feel the need to add and stretch syllables. Her concept albums are imaginative to say the least. From what I've read, she has a real band she's worked with for a while, versus a studio-made artist who hires a band for solely for a live performance. How she found all those left-handed players, even the drummer, is pretty remarkable. "Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.'-Hamlet Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.
kanker. Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 What's that on her head? A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.
CrimsonianKing Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 What's that on her head? Horns. "The purple piper plays his tune, The choir softly sing; Three lullabies in an ancient tongue, For the court of the crimson king"
frogmonkey Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Holy shit I want to play in that band. They put out some ENERGY! Even the cello player was rocking . (in the first clip) Tony, what soul singer doesn't owe a debt to JB?
drawback Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Lots of energy, but I don't hear soul. Good JB hair & cape, though. ____________________________________ Rod Here for the gear.
MonksDream Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Lots of energy, but I don't hear soul. Good JB hair & cape, though. You don't hear soul In Janelle Monae? Listen again Since no one else has posted it, here's my fave rave video of the past year. It gets my award for Best Use Of A Ukelele in a pop song! [video:youtube]pwnefUaKCbc There's also a video of how to do the Tightrope out there for those who want to add it to their repertoire Instrumentation is meaningless - a song either stands on its own merit, or it requires bells and whistles to cover its lack of adequacy, much less quality. - kanker
musicbysterling Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I've got her The ArchAndroid on my iPod, and I need to listen to it more than I have, as it is a concept album and I haven't been in the head space to really take a close listen to it. Some of it really pops out as being extremely creative. Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here! J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Cliffk Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Got both her EP and newer full album. She takes some getting used to but that's because she goes outside the lines we mark as expected from an RnB artist, which she definitely proves she is not. Not the strongest singer but that's just a part of her quite original take on contemporary pop. Good luck to her. YouTube music

She's quite eclectic and probably insanely talented. 57821 - Simon & Garfunkle? [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yQgciCLaWU&feature=related Sir Greendown - Twin Peaks?
