Since one year I bought a SG standard 2009, amazing guitar but the neck is very big and fat!!.....last week I play a 1996 SG standard in a shop....that neck was a little bit smaller than my SG.....I like it.

What is the year when gibson start to produce that big fat neck on SG? I'm going to buy an old model...

I think that they'll tend to vary somewhat, although most SG's have slim necks as far as I know. (Please, somebody correct me if I'm wrong or supply more detailed information!)

Been playing SG's since the mid-70's, and while there is some variation in neck size, there's also been a slight creep upwards over time. Some of those 70's SG necks feel thin compared to the newer ones, even the ones being marketed as "70's Slim-Taper necks" - of course, there were those geniuses who actually shaved/planed the necks of their SG's because they weren't fast enough!?!

I think this is the strangest thing I've ever heard of... The shape and size of a neck is so important for a player! How can they not publish the design specs? They must have them right?

Last year I purchased a used Epiphone SG due to it's light weight - the neck is like a baseball bat. Have a 74 Les Paul Custom and the neck is way slimmer.

I think the re-issue 61 SG (Angus Young model) has a thinner neck but haven't played one yet.

Unlike everyone else I see online, the size of neck and/or fets don't really seem to make a difference to me - am a Lead player but not a shreddie.

Been round the block but am not over the hill...
