darc68 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 So I`m sitting home watching a movie and my cell rings. The voice says Hi this is Joey D Fransico from KeyB Organ and I`m looking for Eric(my real name). I`m like...The Joey D? Yup!! He says. 2 months ago I had written to KeyB about purchasing a KeyBDuo...turn out Joey was returning my email w/ a personal phone call. He actually pitched the organ to me and went over all it`s features. I couldn`t belve it. I mentioned the forum here and told him he should join(not kidding). We shot the breeze for a bit..He said he was in Los Angeles and had went to the Grammy`s last night but didn`t win. Motif ES7 Korg Triton Pro76 Roland Fantom X8 CP -33 Custom B-3 Chop w/ 145 Leslie
darc68 Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 I was honored to talk w/ him and told him so. He was very polite and thanked me for being a fan. BTW-The only option organ wise for us in the states is to wait for the Numa to arrive. He pitched that organ to me as well. It really was surreal. Definately one of my best and oddest phone calls of all time. Motif ES7 Korg Triton Pro76 Roland Fantom X8 CP -33 Custom B-3 Chop w/ 145 Leslie
Meisenhower Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 At least he wasn't calling to ask if you were "happy with your long distance service". Rock on Joey D! mate stubb Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Joey is super nice. He's not above a bit of that east coast "bust your chops" thing if you get to know him. Once I provided an organ (a lovely '59 blonde C-3) for a show for him. I was talking to hammond guru Sal Azzarelli the night before, and mentioned this. When Joey pulled up at the gig, I greeted the band and the first words out of Joey's mouth were "I hope they didn't provide a blonde organ - I hate blonde organs!" He had talked to his buddy Sal of course, and was just busting my chops. We had a great time that evening, he loved my organ, and a few months later when I showed up to a gig in another state, he dragged me into the dressing room for shots. Moe ---
Joe Muscara Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Okay, so who here is thinking about contacting KeyB Organ just so Joey D will call them? "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! darc68 Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 LOLOL!!! It takes awhile to get a reponse. My e-mail was sent about 2 months ago. I was shocked that a guy that just attended the Grammy`s the night before and all it`s great after party`s had me on his "to do" list @ 1:30EST. That makes it 10:30am in L.A. Tomkeen Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 We had a great time that evening, he loved my organ, and a few months later when I showed up to a gig in another state, he dragged me into the dressing room for shots. Wow.

David Loving Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 You're buying one, aren't you, darc68 ? "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
HammondDave Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 By the way, Elvio had some great prices at NAMM for the KeyB Duo... I would have purchased one on the spot if I did not have to worry about the weight. darc68 Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Not sure Daviel. According to Joey there are no dealers in the U.S. @$5600 just for the Dual Manual w/ no Pedals/Stand/Leslie or Seat it`s a big purchase site unseen. Jim Alfredson Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Shoot me your cell and I'll call you and then you can feel REALLY cool. Oh wait, we've talked on the phone before. In all seriousness, Joey's a sincere guy. I would love to try out a Numa. Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
darc68 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 I actually refrenced you B3-er in our conversation. I was telling him about how much you liked your XK3 set-up. He said he knew you and liked your playing. He swears by the KeyBDuo like you swear by your rig B3-er. Both of you have the same quotes when talking about them,"I haven`t taken a vintage on the road in years" and when I asked why you both said "I know what to expect now every night". I found that very compelling. Motif ES7 Korg Triton Pro76 Roland Fantom X8 CP -33 Custom B-3 Chop w/ 145 Leslie
Jim Alfredson Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 That's nice of him to say. I do like my XK3 system, but there is certainly room for improvement. I'd love to hear / play a KeyB system. Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
LX88 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 In my experience Joey is a very down to earth person. And he really is informed about who the up and coming players are. He was very helpful to guys like Tony Monaco and Pat Bianchi and really helped give their careers a kick start. There has probably been a serious amount of investment that has gone on somewhere to help keep the Key B project alive. This thing has been several years in getting off the ground , starting with the Diversi version 3 years ago. I would never want to say anything to try to undermine this endevor. I am fully in support of what they are trying to do. The sound engine really (and I am mean really) sounds good. I remember thinking at NAMM that this could actually be an improvement on the real thing because of the amplification possibilities. But since I can't afford the Key B, I am getting a Numa instead for now. It should be here on Wednesday... I will send a full report.
VegasGT3 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 So, Joey D is representing both the Numa and the KeyB? Kurzweil PC3x, Nord Electro 3, Nord C-1, Casio Privia PX-3, Yamaha DX-7, Korg Polysix, Moog Taurus 3, Yamaha Motif XS (rack),Ventilator, QSC K12, K10

longfuse Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 We had a great time that evening, he loved my organ, and a few months later when I showed up to a gig in another state, he dragged me into the dressing room for shots. Wow. After many years of reading Viz comic, I had the same reaction! Finbarr Re original post, a pretty cool 'cold call'!
darc68 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Apparently the KeyB and Numa(studiologic) are one in the same internally. I`m sure someone here can explain the differences or similarities. Motif ES7 Korg Triton Pro76 Roland Fantom X8 CP -33 Custom B-3 Chop w/ 145 Leslie
darc68 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Hey VegasGT3 - KeyB just posted an interview w/ Joey D on thier FaceBook Page. He talks about how he got from Deversi to StudioLogic. Motif ES7 Korg Triton Pro76 Roland Fantom X8 CP -33 Custom B-3 Chop w/ 145 Leslie
Al Coda Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 But since I can't afford the Key B, I am getting a Numa instead for now. It should be here on Wednesday... I will send a full report. Good news, I´m anxious to read your report ! A.C.
David Loving Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 The numa is said to be terrific. Let us know how it works out. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
richwhite9 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I was honored to talk w/ him and told him so. He was very polite and thanked me for being a fan. Did you ask if he has any Hartford dates planned? He's been here 4 times in the last decade but not since 2008. He usualy gets set up in the Aslyum Street Church courtesy of the Hartford Jazz Society. He 's got a bunch of North East dates in late April.
mate stubb Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Hey VegasGT3 - KeyB just posted an interview w/ Joey D on thier FaceBook Page. He talks about how he got from Deversi to StudioLogic. Well, he avoids talking about it kinda. And it's funny to hear the interviewer talking about how Joey invented a new organ. My speculation, without any proof: Diversi was trying to switch from their technology to KeyB's. At the point Joey got involved with them (and actually invested), I'm sure he expected that they would put a big change into their marketing efforts and move to include the professional player market. That never happened for whatever reason. If I was Diversi, and I could sell the same organ to a church for $12K that I would have to sell to a pro for half that, I might get cold feet about changing my tactics. At any rate, when it became obvious that it was not going to work out for Joey, it's totally natural that he allied with the actual technology people. And the deal which allows DLQ to make money from licensing their engine to Numa will help keep them in business on the bigger KeyB organs. So it's a win-win for everybody IMO. Moe ---
Jim Alfredson Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Did Joey delete his FB account, btw? Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
McMike100 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 . When Joey pulled up at the gig, I greeted the band and the first words out of Joey's mouth were "I hope they didn't provide a blonde organ - I hate blonde organs!" I have a 57 blonde C3. I guess I won't be providing him anything. Mike McRoberts
mate stubb Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I have a 57 blonde C3. I guess I won't be providing him anything. Naw, he loved mine. The full story was that he had played an absolute beater organ the night before in KC. He had a toothache and had been taking medication, and without realizing it had beat his hands sore. When he touched the nice tight action on mine, he had to call Wookie over to show him. He couldn't believe the thing was absolutely stock with no mods or rebuilds ever. All I did was unplug the slow motors for him. I have a 2 DVD set of that show - it's extra special when it is your organ you are hearing. Moe ---
mate stubb Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Why do my organ posts end up sounding, er, vaguely pornographic? Moe ---
MonksDream Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Why do my organ posts end up sounding, er, vaguely pornographic? It's almost impossible to talk about one's organ without someone snickering to themselves! Instrumentation is meaningless - a song either stands on its own merit, or it requires bells and whistles to cover its lack of adequacy, much less quality. - kanker
