zahush76 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 A video about how trent reznor made the soundtrack for the "social network", and tons of analog synths to drool on: Synths used on the social network Vermona Perfourmer mkii, Nord Stage 3 76
yannis D Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Thanx, very interesting video. That's quite a collection. But at least Trent makes music out of those rarities, they don't just sit around! Be grateful for what you've got - a Nord, a laptop and two hands
Steve Force Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 My respect for Trent Reznor went through the roof after watching this video. Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites
DanS Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Excellent. Didn't know Reznor knew how to smile. What we record in life, echoes in eternity. CrimsonianKing Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 "...And you are a classically trained pianist, is that right? "In another life, i was" LOL I was never into his music, but he is a great musician and i've always respected it. "The purple piper plays his tune, The choir softly sing; Three lullabies in an ancient tongue, For the court of the crimson king"

I like the sonics, but always feel like dipping my toes in a wood chipper afterwards. What we record in life, echoes in eternity. NoahZark Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Does anyone know if Trent Reznor did the arrangement of "Creep" shown in the Social Network trailer? [video:youtube] The stripped down arrangement with piano and choir really grabbed my attention and got me interested in the movie when I first saw it. Noah
Dana. Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Does anyone know if Trent Reznor did the arrangement of "Creep" shown in the Social Network trailer? You didn't Svengle. "Creep"
Moonglow Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I dig the synth work, but that simple piano line really sucked me in. It really seems to speak to the loneliness/isolation of the main character, especially during some of the more reflective moments of the flick. Dana. Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I wanna know how Trent gets his piano sound. I see a Roland RD700something in his studio.

I watched Social Network a few weeks ago without knowing who made the score and that piano part stayed in my head for days, very haunting line. That's what i try to tell some guitarrists-friends, most of the time less is more. Sundown Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I saw Social Network last weekend, and my girlfriend and I both noticed Trent Reznor's name in the opening credits. Needless to say, I was paying close attention to the music the whole time. I'm not a huge fan or anything, but I do respect his work, and I knew that the score would be interesting. I wasn't disappointed. Sundown Finished: Gateway, The Jupiter Bluff, Condensation, Apogee Working on: Driven Away, Backscatter, Eighties Crime Thriller Main axes: Kawai MP11 and Kurz PC361 DAW Platform: Cubase
MAJUSCULE Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I wonder how he likes the Voyager XL. I'll probably finally watch this tonight. Eric Website Gear page
Moog_Man Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I wanna know how Trent gets his piano sound. I see a Roland RD700something in his studio. No, they recorded an acoustic piano at varying distances to get the different sound throughout the film. Notice the opening theme is close miked, while the later theme is miked farther away. It follows Zuckerberg's character from beginning to end. No need to use a sampled piano on a film of this budget, particularly not a hardware one.

MAJUSCULE Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Oh, that's not at all my main motivation! I've heard great things about it. But I'd still like to know what Trent thinks of the XL. Eric Website Gear page
Tusker Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Despite the what Trent says about organic, vs. inorganic layers ... I find his "inorganic bed" to be incredibly animated and lively.

I was having difficulty identifying some of the features that made that piano line so effective, and I think you just nailed one of them. As the main character's isolation increases, so does the piano mike distance. Very cool, almost subliminal effect. I will be sure to listen to that more closely should I ever watch the movie again. RobertLauriston Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 What's the keyboard to the left of the Swarmatron, in front of the A-100 rack? There's a close shot of it at 2:08.
non ce futuro Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Very nice video (and nice cave!) I really liked NIN some years ago (when I was young and wild) The soundtrack is amazing, I think everybody notice that the first time they see the movie. I love when Reznor says in the video that they put some noises and drones below some scenes so the public is unease... touch of genious!!
marino Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I'll take the Putney and the ARP 2600, please... the modulars could *really* get me in trouble.
ChrisE Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I have seen this clip before and I'm not a crazed fan of the talented Mr. Reznor, but his haunting piano piece in the show is very moving and effective to say the least. I sure could use his gear . My world: www.chriselkins.ca Roland D-70/SC-55, Kawai K5000s, Korg Triton Extreme 88, Yamaha MO8, Yamaha SY-99, Technics SX-U90P 'Pro90' "I've heard a lot worse!"
