[video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPY3ch8ddG4&feature=player_embedded#! The last part of this video is insane. :freak:

It was a pleasure to be part of this band for a short while (about 2 years after this video) with mostly the same players. This particular period of that band was a powerhouse, which I think transcended the conventions of traditional big bands.

The last video I saw of James Moody is this one (save your ears from a pathetic trumpet battle and skip to 1:47)

Funny thing is that he get's announced as "Miss Flora Purim" who in fact comes on stage after this number. I enjoyed Moody's performance more. ;)

I just checked out that Taylor Eigsti clip from November. Nice! I like that texture he starts with at 5:22. Never heard that before!

Attention all members (that means you) :

It's not often that I suggest a piece is "required listening," but I think this stellar reharm, in the spirit of the Christmas theme, deserves a few seconds of your time. :)

Dude.

SK, really? ;)

Question, is this Deutsch or Yiddish? The first line I know is 100% German, but they are so similar I don't know if the rest is.

Clever arrangement indeed, and cool reharm of the main Jingle Bells theme.

:) A witty exercise in bad taste - like the Ed Wood Jr. of reharms.

The first line is 100% fake German. My guess would be it's some American native speaker trying to imitate something in between German and Yiddish.

I have to say I wish they would have been more consequent in their reharm... the start of the refrain with Imi going to bII and back to I is a perfect idea, but the II7-V7 that follows kinda ruins it for me. Still, a lot of great arranging ideas.

Thanks for posting, SK!

Hey all, I've been away for the forum for a while. This is a fantastic thread.

I've been obsessed with Brazilian music for the last little while, and there are some incredible musicians there. Here's pianist Rannieri Oliveira playing solo at TEDx São Paulo:

Here's the legendary Zimbo Trio, that I had the opportunity to see (and meet) in São Paulo, sans orchestra:

And on a North American tip, here's Chris Potter ripping up "Confirmation":

Happy holidays, guys!

Burnin' solo on Confirmation up there, thanks David.

Here's some different stuff. Drummer Edgar Bateman. Even at his age, he was always totally in control of his musical world, which seemed like it came from another world. His broad freedom and looseness is a reminder to all musicians to be ourselves.

And some of Wes at his best.

Very inspiring stuff. Here are some things I've been listening to lately.

Maria Schneider Orchestra - The Pretty Road (from Sky Blue). Starts off a little edgy, but after 2 minutes the arrangement comes together very nicely.

Holdsworth, Pasqua, Wackerman and Haslip playing Pasqua's "San Michele" at Yoshi's.

For comparison check out the original recording here (middle of the page, couldn't find a video for it): http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1122576/a/Dedications.htm

Just popped "The Bad Touch - Like A Magic Kiss" into the CD-player. Wow... its a killer example of hammond organ in a modern jazz, non-walking bass situation. Loren Stillman on sax and Gary Versace on organ. Me likey muchly!

I hope this is appropriate. Keyboard posted some killer players playing grand pianos at NAMM. I posted it in the NAMM thread but some may have skipped it.

Glen Stewart ripping up an Estonia with an amazing reharm.

There are more videos such as Quincy Bullen on the same ax and a link to Keyboard's YouTube page with even more videos and different grands here.

Love the way he responded to his introduction - if I only had a brain! :D but those funky hymn chords got obnoxious fast and I wanted to hear a little more curiosity from the man. That demo wasn't about Estonia.

That's gotta be Indrek Laul behind him. I'd love to hear him live!

Just bought the Django Bates album "Summer Fruits and Unrest". I have been nonstop-listening to it since. On Youtube there's only this one:

which is a bit fiddly. But the rest of the songs feature a jazz orchestra with great arrangements ranging from crazy to very crazy. More of this sound:

Heartily recommended!

Here's one I've been meaning to post for a while:

[video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NFcrjMbw-8

The summer after my senior year of high school I went to a week long jazz camp at Duquense Unviersity (for trumpet, not piano). Ben Benack happened to be one of the other trumpet players there, along with about 60-70 other students. Anyways, here's this kid (Ben), one of the youngest ones there (I believe he was in 8th grade at the time) and he was far and away the best improviser there. He killed it on every solo. Completely blew me away.
