Winston Psmith
Looked for this w/the 'search' function, and didn't find anything, so I apologize if this is a well-worn topic. I'm a MIDI Guitar guy, with a few keyboards, specifically a MicroKorg, a CZ-1 and a K4; I want to know if I should use one of those Dust Destroyer-type products from my local Radio Shack or office supply store, to give the keyboards a quick cleaning. I'd rather buy another product than spray gunk into a working instrument. I have the usual Radio Shack Cleaner/Lubricant, which works fine for cleaning pots, but I'm not so sure about using it on keys - any help would be appreciated. RedKey
I personally wouldn't use anything but air and maybe a very slightly damp cloth for stubborn stuff. Get a 2-3" paint brush to dust the keys and between knobs/faders.
mate stubb
If you do use a spray cleaner, spray on a cleaning rag and wipe, instead of spraying directly on the keyboard. I use lemon pledge on the keys myself, and just a damp cloth for the panels. Moe ---
JpScoey
For cleaning the keys the best way to get a good result is to use standard washing-up liquid, not 'pure'! - diluted with warm water. This removes the 'grease' that builds up from the sweat off your fingers. The emphasis here is to use a DAMP cloth - if it's wet, you run the risk of water getting between & under the keys, which could cause electrical problems (short-outs). As for the general cleaning of the rest of the 'board, this works too - along with a brush (as RedKey said) to get around the knobs / sliders. I wouldn't recommend a wax-based polish as this leaves a residue which can make the keys 'slippy'. theGman
Why not just use something like Pledge or whatever made for dusting, lightly sprayed on a cloth? Works for me.
Winston Psmith
Thanks, everybody. I've never had a problem cleaning any of my gear with a slightly damp cloth, and a small bit of dish soap (washing-up liquid to our British friends) - it works well on nasty old guitar pedals, too. I was really asking about cleaning under and around the keys, so as not to damage any contact points. Plain old compressed air seems to get the vote of confidence, which was my first choice, anyhow. BTW, I guess that Lemon Pledge is be fine for cleaning wood, but I wouldn't get it near any contact points - it definitely leaves a residue, however thin. Thanks again for helping out a guitar guy. mate stubb
Yeah well, we would not have recommended Pledge if you had said you were talking about cleaning key CONTACTS, instead of "keyboards". Big difference! Moe ---
theGman
I also thought you meant cleaning the keys.
