Keyboard cleaner?

Winston Psmith

Recommended Posts

Looked for this w/the 'search' function, and didn't find anything, so I apologize if this is a well-worn topic.

I'm a MIDI Guitar guy, with a few keyboards, specifically a MicroKorg, a CZ-1 and a K4; I want to know if I should use one of those Dust Destroyer-type products from my local Radio Shack or office supply store, to give the keyboards a quick cleaning. I'd rather buy another product than spray gunk into a working instrument.

I have the usual Radio Shack Cleaner/Lubricant, which works fine for cleaning pots, but I'm not so sure about using it on keys - any help would be appreciated.

For cleaning the keys the best way to get a good result is to use standard washing-up liquid, not 'pure'! -

diluted with warm water.

This removes the 'grease' that builds up from the sweat off your fingers.

The emphasis here is to use a DAMP cloth - if it's wet, you run the risk of water getting between & under the keys,

which could cause electrical problems (short-outs).

As for the general cleaning of the rest of the 'board, this works too -

along with a brush (as RedKey said) to get around the knobs / sliders.

I wouldn't recommend a wax-based polish as this leaves a residue which can make the keys 'slippy'.

Thanks, everybody. I've never had a problem cleaning any of my gear with a slightly damp cloth, and a small bit of dish soap (washing-up liquid to our British friends) - it works well on nasty old guitar pedals, too. I was really asking about cleaning under and around the keys, so as not to damage any contact points. Plain old compressed air seems to get the vote of confidence, which was my first choice, anyhow.

BTW, I guess that Lemon Pledge is be fine for cleaning wood, but I wouldn't get it near any contact points - it definitely leaves a residue, however thin.

Thanks again for helping out a guitar guy. WP
