Anybody heard Black Dub?

Daniel Lanois's new project with Trixie Whitley on vocals, Brian Blade on drums and Daryl Johnson on bass.

It's the best music I've heard in years. Incredibly refreshing!

Yup. Saw them live in February. Debut album is out November 2. For those that don't know, Trixie is Chris Whitley's daughter. Also, Lanois was in a bad motorcycle accident recently--he nearly died--but he seems to have made an excellent recovery. :thu:

Not familiar with the band or the singer, but she's got sort of a Joss Stone vibe to her, both in her sound and her look. Pretty good group though! Thanks for puttin' them on my radar!

Unlike Joss, Trixie doesn't oversing everything. She's also a capable multi-instrumentalist.

Yeah, I wasn't really comparing them from a talent perspective (after all, I hadn't even heard of Trixie Whitley before this thread...), but just a general style. Just from seeing these few clips though, I could kinda sense that Trixie might be a more polished artist than Joss.

Increadibly is not the word for it but that is my opinion. They are good musicians I will admit that. Jazz and Reggae just don't fuse well for me.

Sorry, but I just don't hear much jazz in any of the 4 clips I posted. Some Reggae in the first and last clips. The rest to me is a just a unique blend of soul, rock, and folk.

I saw them at Spaceland in Los Angeles a while back, before Lanois' accident. They are really enjoyable live.

I have to admit, I'd much rather a less over the top singer on this kinda stuff. Singing with restraint is becoming a lost art - the band is playing with a ton of restraint, and the singing here starts over the top and stays there IMO.

Blade is the truth.

Kevin, I agree. She sounds forced here; it's too much. I liked the way they sounded live better -- looser, more raw.

As for Blade, I saw him recently with Chick and Christian McBride. He's on some next level sh*t.

Cool idea, I'd be interested in knowing more, but I don't dig that cut necessarily. It may be soulful but it doesn't stir me for any reason. I wouldn't call it very reggae influenced either.

+1. I saw them all with John McLaughlin as the 5 Peace Band.

Brian & Christian were reading each other's minds.
