Ian Benhamou
Had a great gig with Time For Pink Floyd this past Saturday and want to share some pics. Some background. We started rehearsing in February of '09 as a 4-piece with lots of backing tracks. We did a dozen or so gigs that summer and things went well. Some of the gigs were dives, others were cool festivals. It was a decent start, but I felt musically that there was still much to be perfected in the details like dynamics, tempos, vocal harmonies, etc. Also the setlist was WAAAYYY too long. This year, we decided to expand the band by adding a sax player who's also an excellent guitarist, and 2 backup singers. This allowed us to drop 85% of the backing tracks but it also made us want to add songs to the setlist that featured the new players. So, we obviously had to make some drastic changes to the set, ie, add new songs, yet shorten the show by at least 45min! Anyhow, last Saturday we played at a great venue just 40 minutes outside Montreal that has been around for years and is the place for great tribute acts. Beautiful venue, nice stage, lighting galore, killer sound system and monitoring kit. We all invited a bunch of people but few made it out because they were either musos with a gig or felt it was too far from the city. And this is the closest we've ever played to the city, most of our gigs so far have been in small towns across the province. Well, the place was almost completely full!!! Everyone sitting and just listening and enjoying the music. It was awesome! We've finally found a setlist that's not too long yet allows us to cover the history of the band and flows perfectly from one song to the next. And many of the musical details that were driving me crazy were addressed in the last two rehearsals and were finally put in place. There's still a lot of work to do for it to be as good as I want it to be, but I think we've made a giant leap forward and everyone in the band feels much better about the project. Ian Benhamou
Dude, a couple of your bandmates forgot to shave their heads. I say you bring some clippers to the next rehearsal. Yeah, it seems to be a trend these days. Another band I'm, the drummer, bassist and myself are all head shaven, and the lead singer has hair down to his ass. But of all the guys who shave their heads, I'm one of the only ones who still has a full head of hair. So it's a choice not a way to hide a receding hair line.
