Bosendorphen
Yep, but the difference I see between Messrs. Van Halen and Petrucci is that the former almost always looks like he's having fun and looking for chicks, the latter looks like he's trying to impress the guitarists in the audience. Damn, so THAT'S what I have to do at gigs! Look like I'm having fun and look at chicks! Got it! Marzzz
Any local barber for $15. Seriously, what man wears long hair (besides cartoon characters) since, oh, let's be generous, 1985. That's 25 years ago. If you haven't yet, you should go to NAMM sometime. It's sorta like stepping into a time machine, except people still aged. Tonysounds
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/EddieVanHalen.jpg Yeah, thats an old picture, and lets not forget that he was going through a divorce, mouth cancer, and hip replacement and a bad alcohol problem, which allegedly hes recovering from. As a human being, he has issues (his father was a very bad alcoholic, so his childhood wasnt quite idyllic), but as a musician, yes, hes done a lot to be revered for. You would know that if you had listened to any of his music. That said, I wish he would pull his head out of his behind, and make nice with the guys that helped each other get where they are. Leaving Michael Anthony out of the reunion was petty. If he wanted to take Wolfie on tour, he could have made him the Tshirt guy or something. Putting him onstage was really ill advised from a parenting POV, and from a fans POV as well. He brought nothing to the tablebut hes only 17. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me. Yeah, thats all you have to do. Way to focus on the important thing. There's a surprising amount of truth to it. When the guy on stage looks like he's having fun, the audience has more fun. It's something I could do more of, I tend to be too serious and stiff. There's nothing wrong with a lil sex appeal, females buy tickets and CD's too. Lizst was a big sex symbol too. Millions of women have purchased VH albums. The number that have purchased Dream Theater albums? 27.
Bosendorphen
There's nothing wrong with a lil sex appeal, females buy tickets and CD's too. That's why I thrust and parry onstage in a duel using my strap-on (or if we lose the sexual innuendo, keytar) with our guitarist! Then again with my looks (see avatar) I can use all the help I can get. One man's wankery is another man's artistry. I was just listening to Jimmy Smith play "Blues In The Night" and to me that's good ol' blues riff/Hammond wankery. I prefer Jack McDuff but YMMV. gryphon
Yeah, thats an old pictureIt's not that old, and actually he was younger in that pic of his than I was in the pic I posted of me (but I was being generous).as a musician, yes, hes done a lot to be revered for. You would know that if you had listened to any of his music.I have heard too much EVH music just on the radio. I really dislike it, but that's just my opinion, obviously. If he wanted to take Wolfie on tour, he could have made him the Tshirt guy or something. Putting him onstage was really ill advised from a parenting POV, and from a fans POV as well. He brought nothing to the tablebut hes only 17. How old was Dweezil when he began performing with Frank? 15 was the earliest recording of him I remember, and I think that was on Sharleena live from the Them or Us album. Tonysounds
I didnt mean old in terms of time, but in terms of time that has passed; in other words, thats a stage of his life that it looks like hes moved on from. He looks pretty good now. Theres a world of difference between appearing on stage once or twice (if that even happened; I dont know if Dweezils parts were from that show, or overdubbed later) and going on tour as a band member. Abilities notwithstanding of course. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.

Not everyone is as perfect as you obviously are, no need to shoot them down for it.. Hi Tomkeen Gryphon helped me out on another thread - I have him pegged as one of the good guys. In his defence he has probably (like me at 44) had his fill of dealing with hammered musicians on paying gigs. I'm a hired hand - I try and get along with whomever I'm working with that night, musicians, sound guys, stage crew, management, even the wedding organiser (nice thread). Drunk and stoned musos make the job harder. I know it goes with the territory/image - but it ain't big and it ain't clever. (IMO) O/T I've an old guitar playing band mate who moved to the Netherlands - heard he loves it. Said the audiences are great for the jazz rock stuff he plays (or used to play - it's a few years back and I've lost contact). +1 for Gryphon and bored with hammered bandmates (and spliff breaks at rehearsals - what's that about?) Drunk and stoned musos make the job harder. I know it goes with the territory/image - but it ain't big and it ain't clever. (IMO) I'm sure he is a great guy, but you just don't critise musicians because of how they look or what they use (drugs, alcohol etc.). Some of the (arguably) best music was written by drunk/high musicians. Comparing your own looks with someone that has (as it looks) been through hell and back is just plain silly. Fact is that EVH has achieved a lot as a musician, and has had share of crappy moments in life. If you don't like his music, that's fine, but you can still respect him for what he's done. I also respect him a lot for quitting his drug and alcohol abuse and making a fine comeback as a legendary guitarist. Imo, he deserves a lot of credit for that. O/T I've an old guitar playing band mate who moved to the Netherlands - heard he loves it. Said the audiences are great for the jazz rock stuff he plays (or used to play - it's a few years back and I've lost contact). The audiences are pretty good here most of the time. The part of the Netherlands where I live, not so much, lol. There are a lot of close minded people in and around my town that don't care much for rock/jazz/funk. They are more into German Schlager type music (which I don't care for, lol). In the bigger city's though the music scene is pretty vibrant and a lot of cool stuff can be heard. Hottmagazineonline.com was my wife's e-zine dedicated to the strip club scene. AVG may have confused it with another "hott magazine" which was a gay porn rag. Metal Chef has been on extended hiatus while I attempt to put together a writing team, so the episodes have a bit more continuity. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends. Tonysounds
Dweezil was not overdubbed. It was a (live) concert. You are intimately familiar with EVH and Wolfie but not Frank? Sad. LOLIm not intimately familiar with any (Frank, Dweezil, Eddie, Wolfie) of them; Ive never met them. Do I know their (Frank and Eddie) music? YES. While a lot of Franks albums were live (as were many of studio albums), they werent all recorded totally live or at the same time. He loved taking tapes and permutating them into something else entirely. As any real fan/student of his music knows, he was very fond of pulling tracks from one performance and installing them onto another one (like lifting the guitar track from a 70s recording and laying it on top of the rhythm tracks from another song entirely from another decade, or using a Bozzio drum track from one song and laying over it an entirely different song with players that never even met Bozzio); sometimes he went to great pains to list these juggling acts on credits, sometimes he didnt. So, while Dweezil might be playing on a live version of a particular song, that does not mean that his guitar was recorded at the same time or even for the same song: Dweezils track could have come from anywhere (including the same evening), you just never know. Even Frank was a fan of Eddie Van Halens guitar playing (via Dweezil). While Steve Vai initially worked for Frank as a transcriptionist (starting in 79) he didnt start playing with Frank for another year when Frank decided he wanted some of that stunt guitar on his music. And while Im a huge fan of Franks, lucky enough to have seen him 6 times with his different bands, and own a good 20+ of his albums and cds, Im by no means a Frank musicologist. But I do know Frank was wise as well as smart, and wouldnt have been putting Dweezil on stage for 7 months at the age of 16. Which brings us back to my point, which you sidestepped. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
