Tomkeen
I can't imagine a DT without Mike Portnoy. It'll never be the same.. I didn't like their last two albums anyway, so no big loss for me.

Griffinator
. That's pretty harsh, dude. Griff, After my initial reaction and post, I thought about it a little more, and actually agree with you to some extent. JR is pouring himself out in sincere and cool way, and I think it was a cool way for him to react. It's pretty raw and he even starts singing which I think is just pure emotion letting rip. But implicit in everything that JR does is this, 'I am le BAD ASS' vibe. Even in this. If he didn't think he was 'le badass' he wouldn't have posted that. Maybe not, who I am to speak for him. But the piece isn't 'le badass', it's chopsy free form new age. I'm not mad at it if that's what was really on his mind and this is his off the cuff improv. Yet I feel pretty sorry for the fans that shed their first tear of the year when hearing this. There's just so much more raw, bonafide emotionally charged music out there by people in far greater depths of emotional despair than this. But ultimately who gives a shit, and if he was being real and raw, then I respect it. But real and raw in a 'look at me' kind of way undermines the whole thing. But real and raw in a 'look at me' kind of way undermines the whole thing. I can see where you may get that. I'd like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt - he did this instead of giving the expected interview full of trite "we're really sorry that he has decided to blah blah and we hope someday blah blah and he'll always be our bestest blah blah blah" - I'd rather listen to the music than to that kind of nonsense. Griffinator
I'm all for keyboard-driven self-congratulatory music (hence my handle here)...but I don't "get" Dream Theatre. Maybe because they've been (for the last 8 years or so) primarily guitar and drum-driven self-congratulatory music? Who knows? Maybe with Portnoy off doing something different, the band mind just head back towards the really great balanced stuff they were doing in the late 80's and early 90's... Of course, that would require Rudess to reinvent himself into Kevin Moore, since it was Moore who wrote all those instant classics ("Pull Me Under", "Space-Dye Vest", "Under a Glass Moon", etc)....
