Sorry, I lied about the prize.:laugh:

Here's the deal:

My dad wants to know the name of a song (hymn?) he sang when he was a kid in Episcopal church. This would be in the late 30s. He thinks it may have the word "Palm" or maybe "Psalm" in the title.

My dad is not a musician. He can dabble at the keyboard. When he does he plays about 4 measures of this song, whether any of it is accurate or not I have no idea. This is what he plays:

Song

Any ideas? Anyone? Bueller?

I recognize it, just not sure I should admit it. ;)

It is called The Palms. It's a standard hymn but there must be a grand version of it in one of my mother's old duet books... I"m hearing massive octaves rolling into the chorus. :)

that's exactly the version I remember. wow, talk about a blast from the past. Good catch. :D

My favorite revelation is my dad's version of a IV chord. He uses a major II chord. I've heard him play those 4 measures for 45 years and never knew what the heck he was trying to play. He is trying to teach it to his granddaughter, hopefully he won't teach her the maj II chord.

Yeah, that one pulled my ear too. Haha. I like your dad, he plays the people's music.

There's no other way to whistle!

(On the other hand, there's Beckwith. 6 songs for baritone and piano to poems by e.e.cummings anyone? Oh well. I'm paid to shut up and play. ;) )

Wow... This one definitely rattled loose some cobwebs in the brain. I grew up Episcopalian, and remember singing this - as a 6th grader - when I was in the choir at the church. I remember the piano part being quite powerful. I wonder if there are any old copies of the choral arrangement to be found...

There's an original packed away here somewhere, I'm almost certain of it. I'll try digging it out before Easter and scan it for ya. There's still enough survivors of that era sitting in the pews, I'm thinking of asking somebody to sing it. ;) Should pull out The Holy City and The Lost Chord while I'm at it.

From the same era: I recall a choral piece titled: "God Made Our Hands". Several years back, I sketched out a lead sheet as best I could remember the piece, as it was appropriate for a memorial for which I was asked to play. When visiting my hometown near Chicago, a few years back, I went over to the church and asked for a copy from their music library. That was a very revealing read through: the actual score versus my memory of 30 years prior. The original accompaniment is a bit more elaborate than I recalled, but it was a lot of fun to stumble through...
