Sam Mullins
Chris Squire yelled at me once. Once. A friend and former bandmate used to work at Sun Studio in LA (hope I have the studio right) as an assistant engineer and he worked one of the 80's Yes sessions. Mr. Squire evidently did things like a) asking my friend (who was barely scraping by) if he could pay the cab driver since Chrirs only had 100 dollar bills, b) asking him to go out and get a fresh bottle of vodka ....etc. And then in the other corner Jon Anderson would be spouting complete metaphysical nonsense about crystals. He had a lot of good stories. Mark Schmieder
I worshipped those guys in my teens, but of all the major prog rock bands whose legacies have lasted, they're my least favourite today, in no small part because their music seems to lack passion and their personalities seem to have evolved in less positive ways that those of other prog-rock and pseudo-prog-rock (e.g. Jethro Tull) bands. I have much more positive stories about members of those other bands, including some personal ones. Nevertheless, it saddens me any time I hear a story about a member of Yes that smacks of elitism, arrogance, privilege, or obliviousness. To qualify, there are occasional moments here and there where Anderson shows some soul, but overall I see the band as a macho-fest. Intellectually, the music is interesting, but the most passionate album is the one featuring The Buggles. :-) Eugenio Upright, 60th Ann P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35, D'angelico Bari, Dano Bari Select Strat/Tele, Am Pro Jazzmaster, LP 57 Gold, G5422DC-12, T486, T64, PM2, EXL1, XK4, Voyager

mcgoo
Jeez....I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything hot when I saw that. that makes 2 of us! I got to open for Yes once. Alan White was a total gentleman & seemed anxious to meet & yak with the whole band. Squire never noticed our existence. Howe was fuming to Anderson about Igor who was busy trying to make some underage girl, and Anderson hardly heard anything I said to him but was anxious to tell me about some new age religion. Quite a fun hang actually. Custom Music, Audio Post Production, Location Audio www.gmma.biz https://www.facebook.com/gmmamusic/

Tonysounds
Yeah, Steve has lost some of his execution over the years. I met Jon and Rick Wakeman about 4 (?maybe 7 now?) years ago, the tour Rick came back again. Rick was a complete GUY, and funny as hell. Jon was very gracious and generous with his time. Steve and Chris stayed in their dressing rooms. Alan was the 'man about town' and was so swamped you couldn't get near him; Jon and Rick were the guys I wanted to meet anyway, and I brought Rick his (then current) Keyboard mag coverstory to sign, as well as an old one from the 70s, and Jon ripped the just-purchased Symphonic Yes dvd out of my hands, pulled the shrink wrap off, and asked someone for a Sharpie, and then proceeded to autograph it for me (unasked) while advising which cuts he thought were the best....and never spilled a drop of his wine! I sense bitterness and forum jealousy, from wise musicians who thrive in the anonymity of the Internuts Oh I don't know about that. I certainly think he'll go down as one of the greatest guitarists ever.... but I also think he looks & acts like a grumpy old man who is becoming more & more out of touch with the real workd. Ever heard the acoustic version of Roundabout? They wanted to give it a Chicago blues flavor. Everyone seemed to give their take on it, and though it wasn't very authentic sounding, Howe was the one guy in the bunch that seemed clueless & pretty much stuck to his original part throughout. It's a shame to see an icon grow old but not grow musically. I sense bitterness and forum jealousy, from wise musicians who thrive in the anonymity of the Internuts I played with Yes when they did the symphony tour, I was concertmaster of the Yes Symphony. Howe was the only band member to come before the show, he rehearsed Mood for a Day and other stuff from his set. The rest of the guys arrived at 8:10 for an 8pm show. No sound check, no rehearsal with the orchestra, they got off the bus and walked on stage. I'll give Howe kudos for actually caring enough about his work to do a sound check. I sense bitterness and forum jealousy, from wise musicians who thrive in the anonymity of the Internuts Im sure Steve isnt exactly hurting, but I wouldnt count on him being Simon Cowell or Taylor Swift rich. Yes has a history of incredibly inept management (or more likely intra-band mismanagement) and through bad record deals and touring decisions, have managed to taint what should have been a truly spectacular legacy. Post Trevor Rabin, theyve needed to bring Billy Sherwood because Howe refuses to play 90125-era material, but unlike Drama material (which Anderson wont sing), 90125 was their biggest selling album, so theyve been forced to make some concessions. Theyve done tours here in America in their twilight years that have been grossly undersold (2500 seats filled in an 18,000 seat outdoor venue, less than 2000 seats sold at an 18,000 indoor arena here.I was at both shows), and their recent cheezeball repacking of material just diminishes their stature. That said, Ive seen Howe at least 30 times (28 with Yes, 3x with Asia), and I can see where he might be difficult to work with. (Ive seen most of those shows from the first 5 rows, as I like watching the band interaction.) Still love those guys, but things is what they is. The turnout at the shows I did was just as you describe, about 3K at outdoor venues that hold 18K. Our pops orchestra gets 6,000 at the same venues. Ironically, some of their later albums are quite good. "The Ladder" was a very good album. I thought "Talk" was one of the best albums under the "Yes" moniker, even if it is more of a Rabin solo album than an actual Yes album.

Yeah that's pretty funny stuff, although a bit in contrast to the 6 Wives live show he recently came out with.
