Them Crooked Vultures were on Austin City Limits this weekend. Now I know Josh Homme isn't the most technical player. In fact, sometimes when he solos it can be just nasty to watch, but he can come up with some pretty cool riffs. I thought it was a great show, all in all. Grohl is a consistant drummer and rocks pretty hard. Maybe I should also post this in the bass forum, cause here's the main point of my thread. (besides the fact that I love this band)

John Paul Jones is a badass. In my youth I was ignorant, foolish, and pretty superficial. (maybe I still am :D) I couldn't stand John Paul Jones. Maybe it was because I'm not usually a big fan of organ (sorry keys guys stoppin by), but I suspect it was cause of that renaissance haircut he had! Anyhow, I was really impressed with his playin. How about that six string with the light up face dots? Very Halloween.

I did not enjoy them on SNL, and I really like Grohl and JP Jones. I expected -something- and felt cheated when all they did was thrash around like a carp on a line.

Haven't seen either TV appearance yet, but have long thought quite highly of JPJ's talents as a bassist, and the almighty riff has always held a lot of weight for me.

I'm not a big fan of fishing, but I did enjoy the music! :poke::laugh:

I respect them all and like them each to varying degrees, especially the other guitarist - Alain Johannes, who led a great early '80s band that shared members with the Red Hot Chili Peppers called What Is This that was truly an original and accomplished thing - but it doesn't really do it for me... a lot of talent, but the songs don't rise to it IMHO... not on the level of any of their individual things.

this one just sounds like a dirgey take on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo"

I think it would look better with the bridge and bridge pickup lined up along with the top cutaway matching the bottom for a double cutaway look...the F holes give the old classic vibe to the thin body, with the swirled W sting holder...and I really like guitars with the chord plug on the outside bottom edge instead being mounted on the body...a master volume up front in the lower cutaway area would be helpful...but the stock model is cool...

I TIVO-ed the performance and keep coming back to watch it when I can. Everytime I do I find something else I didn't notice before. The triplet lick in Grohl's intro to New Fang blows my mind. I play drums as well and, while I totally know what he's playin, I can't cop his touch or feel. Great stuff from both him and JPJ! Really fantastic players IMO. (If only Josh's chops were up there, too...:o:laugh:)
