Styx - Fooling Yourself

Can anyone tell me what keyboard Styx uses for the intro, middle lead and end lead solos on this song? I wish I had the sound on my S80 but can't really find a comperable sound. Not that I am going to go out and purchase a board just for this song but I'm just curious now. Thanks in advance! -Rod

Besides the Minimoog, at the time Styx was also endorsing ARP synths, and Dennis DeYoung also used an Oberheim 4-voice on that album. The opening and ending solos could have been done on any of those - I don't remember which for sure... IIRC the middle solo (the one in 7/4) was done with the Oberheim, presumably with several voices in unison.

They're both easy sounds to simulate though. Just take a couple of sawtooth waves with a fairly bright filter setting and a bit of portamento. For the middle and end solos, tune the oscillators in unison, pretty tightly tuned. For the opening solo that reccurs toward the end, tune one of the oscillators two octaves up. That's how I used to get that sound on my old ARP Odyssey "back in the day"!

Oops, sorry about the error. I was just playing "Lucky Guy" by Todd Rundgren the other day and got my wires crossed. Thanks for the information too.

Got my wires crossed on the titles, not the songs. Gosh, I'm glad I could be the first to ever make a mistake on this forum. :(

I have a Motif ES and if I remember correctly there is/was a website dedicated to the Yamaha S80/90 (www.sninety.com). At motifator.com they have voice libraries available that nail those Styx sounds. I feel relatively certain they would be available for the S80 as well. Also doesn't the S80 have expansion slots for PLG cards? If so I highly recommend the PLG150-AN Analog Board for covering 80% of your VA needs without buying another board.

Intro lead is ARP Odyssey. Not easy to replicate.

I guess that explains why I was able to get that sound so easily on my old Odyssey.

I would disagree that it's difficult to replicate, though. Just using the settings I suggested above should get you pretty close on most any synth that has portamento (glide). The trick is to get the portamento rate just right.
