Tonysounds
Ive been trying to get my S90es to send volume control (via foot pedal) to my midi rack on a Master preset basis (I want this capability on some Master presets, but not all), but I cant seem to make the S90es do this correctly. Any tips? I can get the volume SLIDERS to do it, but I want foot control. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
Tusker
Hey Tony, The S90Es is a fine synth and a modest master controller. I plug the pedal into FC2 rather than FC1. FC1 defaults to sending MIDI 007 - volume. When you turn on the "MIDI" toggle for a particular zone in the S90Es, it's going to send 007 down that zone's channel whether you like it or not when you sweep the foot pedal plugged into FC1. Most synths will respond to 007 globally as you mentioned. By contrast FC2 defaults to sending MIDI cc 004. If you program the receiving module to respond with volume swells on certain patches ... you are fine plugging your pedal into FC2. This way you can have volume swells one moment, wahs the next etc. The downside is that over time your receiving synth will have a whole slew of custom patches that you have to keep track of. I know. It's a modest controller. Hoping this helps a bit. Jerry
Tonysounds
Crapso youre saying I have to go into the modules themselves and edit? I cant just program FC2 to send volume in the S90es, and in the S90es memory locations determine whether or not that controller is active? Like I can with the sliders? Suppport Guy
By default FC2 is set to cc #4. This can be changed for all voices globally (Utility mode) but is programmed in each performance and multi individually. This means that from master mode, with zone control on, you will have to set FC2 to cc#7 for each of the performances or multis that you assign to the master mode memory (voices will automatically work if you stored the utility setting). In this way it should do what you need it to do, Just specify a zone for control of your external TG. (BTW, Tusker, the actual factory default for FC1 is CC#11.) Tonysounds
I dont want the pedal to work in Voice mode so Ill leave at the factory default. (Is 04 still an unassigned message or will it send something goofy?) For Master, can you direct me to the appropriate page in the manual, or is there a simple shortcut you can share? (like Edit/Zone/scroll down to Vol) This is something I am going to do A LOT. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
Suppport Guy
No...leave it...no problem...nothing goofy. As I said, the FC2 CC#7 is programmed and stored per performance and multi, then assigned to the master mode memory location. Once programmed as CC#7 in the perf/multi, when assigned to a master memory and zone enabled (from the memory tab in master mode), you can then specify the transmit channel, bank select and program change (note limits etc.) and which which physical controller you wish to enable on each of the four zones for the (modest;) MIDI control of your external TGs. In performance/multi mode, edit (common) [F4] "CTL ASN" Have fun!

Nicky
don't mean to hijack this thread, but it is related.... I have a S70XS. I'm trying to control the "VCM Pedal Wah" with FC2 in voice mode. There is actually a patch called "Pedal Wah Clavi FC2"....but I can't seem to figure out how the pedal is controlling the effect. In fact, if I disable all the effects, the FC2 pedal still seems to be creating a type of wah effect, or I think it's just raising the volume of one of the elements (waveforms). I was hoping I could just mimic this patch but I don't really get what it's doing as the pedal control is set to 0 in the effects page. So...how, after choosing "VCM pedal Wah" as your insert effect, do you map FC2 to control the wah?
Suppport Guy
Its done in the control sets. If you look at the voice Pre1 F04 "Pedal Wah Clavi FC2" in control set 1 the source is FC2 and the destination is Insert A "pedal control". Everything you need to know can be gleaned from looking at the way this voice works. Also pay attention to the depth setting. If you bypass the insert effect you will no longer hear the Wah. Nicky
ok thanks! What is the "pedal control" in the actual effects page?
Suppport Guy
Its the parameter in the pedal wah effect algorithm that makes it work the way it does...

Glad you are around here to help us. I stand by my assertion that the master controller features in our beloved instrument are modest. It'll be a cold day in hell before I build and store a set of performances or multis with each different variation in controller assignments ... simply to drive external TG's in different ways ... Still love the instrument as a bread and butter synth though. Today I was looking for some of the sounds that Dave Stewart uses in Beelzebub ... and I found that the 18S filter in parallel with a four pole ... gets me that nice narrow "snarl" ... along with the bottom. That 18S is a nice filter. Jerry
Tonysounds
Ok...I thought I understood the tips here, but I don't. Some quick background with what I'm doing with the rig: 1-while using the S90es in Master mode, I will be using its internal sounds exclusively (for now anyway) in Voice mode. 2-I really just want to be able to assign FC2(or FC1) as a volume pedal in Master Mode to control external modules, and once in the Master I know how to enable/disable the FC2. But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to ASSIGN FC2 its controller function in master mode; I've used the manuals, I've played with the buttons, but I cannot locate where I assign FC2's function. Since I'm not using the S90es performances in Master Mode, how the heck do I get what is really an uber-basic function to work? HELP! Thank you in advance for your patience! Tusker
I can't figure out how to ASSIGN FC2 its controller function in master mode... Tony, try doing this part of Support Guy's advice ... start by assigning the FC2 in a performance or multi. Then pull the performance/multi into a zone in master mode: Once programmed as CC#7 in the perf/multi, when assigned to a master memory and zone enabled (from the memory tab in master mode)... The master will "read" the performance/multi and obtain the controller assignments from there. (at least that's my understanding) Hope this helps, Jerry

Im at work now, which makes this hard to recreate from memory, but I couldnt even find a page in the menu (or manual) that allowed me to assign FC2s destination; whenever I got to a page where I could get to Ctl Assign, it would allow me to dial up FS1, FS2, FC1, FC2( 04 ), and wouldnt let me into the 04 to adjust it. But again, this is crazy as any Voice I want to use in a Master Id have to assign to a Performance and lose FX processing? I also need to have the other 3 zones in a Master available to go to my rack. Please tell me theres a way to do this using Voices. Heck, even the NORD STAGE! allows you to use foot pedal control of volume for parts in an External set up. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me. JohnH
Originally Posted By: Tusker " Tony, try doing this part of Support Guy's advice ... start by assigning the FC2 in a performance" No it's for Voice mode, not Performance. You have to go to voice mode, then press Utility, F3 SF4. Cursor to Foot Controller 2 then turn the dial from 04 to 07. Press Store to save this change. In Master you can turn it on and off per zone by pressing Edit, Track Select, track number (1-4) SF5 (to turn it to one zone) F3. Cursor down till you see FC1 and FC2, you are now at the zone select screen. I am assuming you have control in the Master set to zone, if you don't you can't get to this screen. (Press Store Enter Yes to save the changes.

JohnH
Hi Tusker. Ah...Im rereading his post and Im confused too. Maybe not! The bottom line though Tony- You have to assign the pedal to what you want it to do in a particular mode, (voice Performance, etc...) then assign that voice or performance to a Master. You can't do those FC1/FC2 assignments that I mention in my post in Master.
Suppport Guy
Tony, you said: "1-while using the S90es in Master mode, I will be using its internal sounds exclusively (for now anyway) in Voice mode." I said earlier: "By default FC2 is set to cc #4. This can be changed for all voices globally (Utility mode)" You said: "I dont want the pedal to work in Voice mode so Ill leave at the factory default. (Is 04 still an unassigned message or will it send something goofy?)" This is where things went wrong. If you are going to "point" the master at a voice, what you want FC2 to send is determined by how it is programmed in the voice mode. So from voice mode go to the UTILITY mode as described above and set and store FC 2 to CC#7. Then when you use any voice in a master and you enable the zone control, FC2 will send CC#7 to all the zones you select it to. Post back and let us know.
