TimR
All on stage waiting to start tonights new years eve gig. I was doing last minute tuning checks. The E string was showing D on the tuner, adjusted no change, kept adjusting then everything went floppy. Initially I thought it was a broken string. I haven't had a broken string in years. No problem I'll quickly change it. Then realised that the peg had sheared off. No spare bass and we're about to start. I played the first song on the A string with a few wrong notes and decided there was no way I could play the whole gig like that. During the next two songs I completely restrung the bass with the E in the A, A in the D and the D in the G position. I played the whole gig with 3 strings, some of the songs were quite a challenge. Looks like some of tonight's money is going on a set of tuning pegs, and quite possibly a new nut. Chad Thorne
Don't feel bad. I got to the gig tonight, about 1.5 hrs. from my house, only to realize I had forgotten my bass. Had my amp, cables, mics, stands - no bass. Fortunately the folks organizing the event made some calls and found a bass to borrow, but it was right-handed, so I spent the evening playing upside-down. I got through it, but now my brain hurts...

Chad Thorne
You guys really shouldn't drink til after the gig. At least we HAD a gig. "Oh, no, he ditn't!" Sorry, D., it was too easy. I wish I had intoxication as an excuse. The truth is that I suffer from debilitating brain cramps that strike without warning. I can't tell you how humiliated and angry at myself I was when I realized I'd forgotten my bass. My wife tells me I need to forgive myself - working on it...My bandmates were great, however, treated the whole thing with patience and good humor. jlrush
I can't imagine playing upside down, or with only three strings. Visit my band's new web site. www.themojoroots.com
TimR
I can't imagine playing upside down, or with only three strings. It's not something I would choose to do again. Thoeretically I suppose it could be done with only one string, but what happens above the 8th fret is a mystery to me. It made Bob Marley's - Is This Love extremely challenging. A lot of the notes from the original were missing from my 3 string interpretation. Chad Thorne
One of the event organizers, who knew I was playing upside down, remarked to my wife that I must be extremely bright to be able to do it. My wife agreed that this was so. In truth, being a lefty player, I often find myself noodling upside-down on righty guitars. And the experience of having to switch from righty to lefty years ago probably helps, too.

b5pilot
It must have been the night for bass mishaps. right near the end of the 2nd set the screw holding the strap button on the horn sheared right off. Fortunately I brought another bass or I would have had to spend the rest of the night sitting at the end of the stage. I've had machine heads disintegrate during gigs. A royal pain! Congrats toughing through it! Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband

b5pilot
There's always Gaffa/Duck tape. The show must go on. True but it really gums up the finish on the bass. That same problem did happen to me in the past. At that time I wrapped the still attached part of the strap around my belt and just held it with my left hand as I played. pretty uncomfortable but it worked. Still I'd rather use a backup bass. Davo-London
Well done Tim. I guess this was the one occasion when a spare bass would have been a God-sent. Still I'm bound to ask, did anyone in the audience notice? Which bass was it? TimR
It was the Ibanez, the singer asked if I was taking a spare bass. I've never had a bass break and told him no. We think that was what jinxed it. Machinehead in Hitchin are going to contact Ibanez on Monday for me. The audience were told by the singer at every opportunity. Chad Thorne
The audience were told by the singer at every opportunity. A taint-smite might be in order... The only thing that was said about my predicament was that Ron said, "And that's Chad 'Lamb Chop' Thorne on that pretty blue bass!", teasing me a little. Very few people knew I had forgotten my bass and was playing a borrowed one upside-down.

TimR
Splendid. New set of machineheads ordered - £35. They come as a set but I think I will change them all as I don't know what state the rest are in. I'm hoping to have my G-string back on for Friday Night.
