"Rock is depressing"

"Rock is grotesque"

"Rock is mostly a guy thing, like video games" (this from the rock vocalist)

"You have to be in a group" (she then added, jokingly, "a group full of rock musicians!")

"Rock is for guys who are trying to attract chicks"

"Rock instruments are guy instruments"

Very cool, Larry. Data is always good, at least from an empirical perspective.

Having conducted a few focus groups in my day, the next step is a classification procedure:

#1 & #2 - aversion to style of music

#3 & #6 - Rock = maleness

#4 - Social facilitation associated with group membership

#5 - Secondary gain issues

Hopefully, this will bring us closer to answering the "why" question, although Steve's point addressing the influence of social modeling is hard to argue against; the origins of stereotypes often stem from social modeling and are sustained through reinforcement. Perhaps the family unit can best facilitate change in this regard.

Need to put further thought into this thought-provoking issue, but have a gig. See you all on the flip side!

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."

- George Bernard Shaw
