David Loving
I just discovered the dvd, "Trying to Get Good, the jazz odyssey of Jack Sheldon". Has anyone else seen it? It's a terrific movie - lots of old jazzers - west coast. Growing up I was a west coast fan, dave pell, shorty rogers, andre previn, shelley manne, Chet Baker, and Jack Sheldon. My favorite era. I think Sheldon channels a little Chet Baker in his sound, but it's his own sound. It's unforgettable. I was shocked to hear his sesame street stuff way back then, but, hey, it's a gig. He has done a lot of movie themes, sandpiper and some of Mancini's. His trumpet mentor is the guy whose trumpet is the Chinatown theme. Good motivator movie - makes me want to go practice for about 5 or 6 hours! "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
Mark Zeger
I'm ashamed to admit I've only seen clips from this movie but I'm all over it this weekend. That and "The Jazz Baroness" doc on HBO/On Demand.
