felix
I haven't seen Inglorious Basterds or Gran Torino yet - I will now though. I really liked the different and indy vibe of Hangover, District 9, and Fantastic Mr Fox. Star Trek was an admirable re-boot. Avatar makes the list on the fx alone, though I deduct points for the lame tired plot. The first part of Up was amazing. I think the beginning of that movie pretty much elevates the rest of it. 2 that I haven't seen mentioned though that I thought were well done: Moon (really should end up among other classic sci-fi films) The Road (though it still pales in comparison to the book)

Bridog6996
The most 'blown away' I was by any movie would have to be the remake of Casino Royale. You can hardly call that a remake. Actually, Fleming stipulated in his will that a movie could not be made from his book, "Casino Royale". That didn't keep Peter Sellers and Woody Allen from making a bad takeoff of Bond movies using that title, nor did it keep the holders of the JB brand from making a good Bond movie with that name, but neither uses the book's content. It's the best of the JB movies, dispensing with most of the over-the-top cliches while keeping the good action scenes and more believable intrique. (And I'm a fan of the old schlocky JB movies.) For my money, Connery made the only really great Bond movies. I don't like Daniel Craig, nor any of the other Bonds for that matter, but Craig is the worst of the lot IMO. To me, the appeal of James Bond was never about serious storytelling, action-packed sequences, or believability. I'm not a fan of the new "re-booted" emo Batman either. I say Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson were the best Batman and Joker. Unfortunately, every Batman sequel from that particular iteration went way off the mark. reidmc
No mention of "Up in the Air?" Not convinced it was the best I've seen this year but it was right up there. If the question is best 09 release, I need to see "Hurt Locker" and "Homecoming" before I can answer this question. . .both have garnered strong critical recognition "The Doomer allows the player to do things beyond which are possible without the accessory." NoahZark
The Road (though it still pales in comparison to the book) I haven't seen the movie yet, but I just finished reading the book. Wowza, is it depressing. Noah

Bobadohshe
Man, I can't wait to see Sherlock Holmes based on these recommendations. You'd think with Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. you couldn't go wrong, but you never know. Glad to hear it was quality.
