Splitting a two-channel stereo track into a true five-channel surround track is like making a stereo track from a mono track. I don't think it's really possible. If anything, when dealing with stereo, a 5.1 system probably reverts to 2.1, where it will separate L+R to their respective sides, with the two side speakers (left rear/left front and right rear/right front) basically doubling each other.
